Liverpool vs Tottenham prediction: How will Premier League fixture play out?

Liverpool return to domestic action this weekend by taking on Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield.

Jurgen Klopp’s men saw their Premier League winning streak come to an end last weekend when they were held by Manchester United at Old Trafford, with Adam Lallana equalising five minutes from time.

But they restored confidence by beating Genk 4-0 in the Champions League, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s double and goals from Sadio Mane and Mo Salah ensuring Liverpool ended their win drought away from home in Europe.

Tottenham also enjoyed European success in midweek by thrashing Red Star Belgrade 5-0, but their current Premier League fortunes are a stark contrast to their hosts on Sunday.

Spurs sit 13 points behind Liverpool in the table with just nine Premier League matches played, and need a result to ease the pressure on Mauricio Pochettino.

Prediction – Liverpool 3-1 Tottenham

This fixture was a tightly-fought contest last season, with Toby Alderweireld’s last-minute own goal giving Liverpool a crucial win. But it is difficult to see such a contest this time around.

Liverpool’s front three exhibited some exquisite moments of technical genius and vision in Belgium in midweek, most notably Roberto Firmino’s rabona pass to Sadio Mane, who alongside Salah were clinical in front of goal when they got their chance.

Klopp’s men were tested early on defensively but with Alexander-Arnold and Matip back in the side they should be a more secure unit.

Spurs may have thrashed Red Star but in truth they were rarely threatened and the form of Liverpool’s front three will be a concern for a side who have not fired in the league recently at either end of the field.

Tottenham certainly have the talent to trouble Liverpool but displays of that skills have been few and far between in the Premier League, as last weekend’s draw with Watford highlighted.

The gap between Liverpool and Manchester City may have been cut last weekend, but it isn’t likely that it will be reduced in size for the second week running.

When is it?

Kick-off is at 4:30 PM BST on Sunday 27th October

Team news

Jurgen Klopp will hope to have Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joel Matip back involved in the side after both missed the midweek win at Genk.

Matip has been struggling with an ongoing knee issue while Alexander-Arnold missed out through illness, but Klopp remains hopeful that the duo will recover in time to take their places in the XI.

Mauricio Pochettino has no fresh injury concerns despite Dele Alli, Jan Vertonghen and Son Heung-min all coming off in the win against Red Star.

Ryan Sessegnon and Hugo Lloris remain medium-term and long-term absentees but otherwise Spurs have a full squad from which to pick.
