Liverpool vs Tottenham predicted lineups: Team news and more ahead of the Premier League fixture

Liverpool FC and Tottenham Hotspur go head-to-head at Anfield this weekend in what is a huge clash for both sides in the Premier League.

Jurgen Klopp’s side failed to take three points for the first time in the league this season when they were held by Manchester United at Old Trafford, where substitute Adam Lallana popped up to cancel out Marcus Rashford’s opener.

However, the free-flowing football in attack returned soon enough as Liverpool delivered a dominant performance against Genk in the UEFA Champions League in midweek, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain scoring twice.

The midfielder has given Klopp a positive selection headache for a game in which the German will also hope to see Joel Matip and Trent Alexander-Arnold return after missing the game in Belgium.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men were also victorious in Europe this week with a 5-0 thrashing of Red Star Belgrade, but the pressure is still on Spurs when it comes to domestic matters, as they currently sit 13 points behind their opponents on Sunday after managing just a 1-1 draw with Watford on Saturday.

Team news

Jurgen Klopp will hope to have Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joel Matip back involved in the side after both missed the midweek win at Genk.

Matip has been struggling with an ongoing knee issue while Alexander-Arnold missed out through illness, but Klopp remains hopeful that the duo will recover in time to take their places in the XI.

Mauricio Pochettino has no fresh injury concerns despite Dele Alli, Jan Vertonghen and Son Heung-min all coming off in the win against Red Star.

Ryan Sessegnon and Hugo Lloris remain medium-term and long-term absentees but otherwise Spurs have a full squad from which to pick.

Predicted line-ups

Liverpool: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson; Fabinho, Henderson, Wijnaldum; Salah, Mane, Firmino

Tottenham: Gazzanigga; Aurier, Sanchez, Vertonghen, Davies; Ndombele, Sissoko; Lamela, Alli; Son, Kane

Odds

Liverpool are the favourites in this meeting with Paddy Power backing them at 1/2.

Tottenheam meanwhile can be backed to inflict a first league defeat of the season on Jurgen Klopp’s men for odds of 5/1.

For a draw you can get odds of 16/5.

Prediction – Liverpool 3-1 Tottenham

This fixture was a tightly-fought contest last season, with Toby Alderweireld’s last-minute own goal giving Liverpool a crucial win. But it is difficult to see such a contest this time around.

Liverpool’s front three exhibited some exquisite moments of technical genius and vision in Belgium in midweek, most notably Roberto Firmino’s rabona pass to Sadio Mane, who alongside Salah were clinical in front of goal when they got their chance.

Klopp’s men were tested early on defensively but with Alexander-Arnold and Matip back in the side they should be a more secure unit.

Spurs may have thrashed Red Star but in truth they were rarely threatened and the form of Liverpool’s front three will be a concern for a side who have not fired in the league recently at either end of the field.

Tottenham certainly have the talent to trouble Liverpool but displays of that skills have been few and far between in the Premier League, as last weekend’s draw with Watford highlighted.

The gap between Liverpool and Manchester City may have been cut last weekend, but it isn’t likely that it will be reduced in size for the second week running.
