Liverpool transfer roundup as Kylian Mbappe linked with Anfield switch

Liverpool have tended to be one of the more measured clubs in the transfer market in recent times.

The Reds have been content to bide their time in order to secure their first-choice targets, rather than panic-buying on deadline day like many of their peers.

And while they may not abandon that principle entirely, their needs have been brought into sharp focus by the significant injury which Virgil van Dijk suffered in the recent Merseyside derby.

Liverpool look set to be without their top defender for most – if not all – of the rest of this season.

So the January transfer window could be one of the liveliest at Anfield for quite some time. With that in mind, let’s take a look at the Liverpool transfer rumours which are currently doing the rounds.

Is Mbappe Anfield bound?

Despite Jurgen Klopp having publicly stated in the past that a move for Kylian Mbappe is not on the cards for Liverpool, stories regarding the possibility of that transfer continue to circulate.

Le Parisien are reporting (via the BBC) that the 21-year-old does not want to extend his contract with Paris Saint-Germain and so could be set to leave the French capital next summer.

Real Madrid or Liverpool are said to be his potential destinations, and it’s hard not to assume that the former could outbid the latter if it came down to an auction.

But at a time when Liverpool fans are looking for some good news to lift the Van Dijk injury gloom, this story could be just the ticket.

Did Liverpool bid for Fernandes?

If you want hot insight on transfer news, who better to ask than a player’s dad?

Joelson Fernandes’ father has claimed that Liverpool and Arsenal made an effort to sign the Sporting Lisbon wonderkid in the summer.

“My wish was always for him to stay at the club, but due to his quality as a footballer, he had calls from several European clubs,” Eusebio Mango Fernandes told Guinean outlet Jornal Odemocrata.

The 17-year-old has time on his side and would have struggled for game time at either Premier League club this season, so it’s probably for the best that he continues his development in Portugal.

This could be one to watch next summer, though.

Coady dismisses Carragher question

Conor Coady is in arguably the form of his career, having recently played and scored for England at Wembley.

While he has established himself as an indispensable cog of Nuno Espirito Santo’s Wolves side, he began his career with Liverpool. However, he only made two appearances for the club – against Anzhi Makhachkala and Fulham – before moving on.

And with the Reds now in the market for a defender, another former Liverpool centre-back, Jamie Carragher, made a cheeky suggestion to Coady that he could be set to return to the club where he started out in football.

But – as the Evening Standard have reported – the Wolves skipper knocked the idea on the head when it was put to him on Monday Night Football.

“I can’t believe you have just put this to me here! No, not at all,” he said. “I love playing for this club, we’ve just beat Leeds in an amazing, amazing game. You know what I am like.”
