Liverpool training match details as Mane and Keita score at Anfield

Jurgen Klopp put his Liverpool squad though a training match at Anfield on Monday as the Reds continued to work their way back to full fitness.

The suspension of football since early March has meant that the club have been forced to put their likely Premier League title celebrations on hold, with the coronavirus pandemic putting a first top-flight league crown for 30 years into perspective.

When they do eventually get to clinch and celebrate the title things promise to look a little different given that there will be no fans inside Anfield to the toast the victory with the players, but with the Premier League ready to return on June 17 Klopp is hoping that his stars will be in top shape.

It was Liverpool vs Liverpool at an empty Anfield

The Reds need just six points at most to be crowned champions, and so there were plenty of serious faces on show during a full 11-a-side training match at an empty stadium.

“We wanted to give the players the feeling of playing and competing without a crowd,” said Reds assistant boss Pep Lijnders to the club’s official website.

“We are just going step by step back to our way of playing, knowing that we have to work hard in training and be really committed to our principles to reach the same level that we had.

“Today was an important step in that direction; firstly getting familiar with the process around the games and secondly giving our squad playing time and competition very close to the environment that we will have in the future.”

Gini Wijnaldum didn’t take part in the match in a precautionary measure, and watched on from the sidelines.

Cameras caught the players in action and, while it isn’t known what the final score was, they did snap Mane rounding Adrian before celebrating a goal as if he’d had scored it in the Premier League, while Keita also fired one home in front of the empty Kop.

Liverpool’s first match back will be the Merseyside derby against Everton on June 20.
