Virgil van Dijk has predicted he will be fit to face Southampton on Friday night despite picking an injury on Sunday.

The centre-back needed ice on his ankle after a dramatic 2-1 win over Tottenham, but played the full game against Spurs.

Jurgen Klopp will be sweating over the fitness of his star defender, who has helped make Liverpool the most formidable defence in the Premier League.

But Van Dijk played down concerns about his ankle, insisting he will play against his former side.

‘Yeah I’ll be fine,’ Van Dijk said after the game.

‘But it hurts, we have to take a look at it, but I’ll be fine for Friday.’

The victory over Spurs sent Liverpool back to the top of the Premier League table, but Manchester City have a game in hand over their rivals.

Van Dijk ensured Liverpool could snatch a late winner when he successfully managed a two-on-one break from Spurs.

Moussa Sissoko was bearing down on goal, but Van Dijk cut off the pass to Heung-min Son, forcing the midfielder to take on the shot himself – which he missed.

Liverpool then went on to force a mistake from Tottenham and snatch all three points with 25 seconds remaining of normal time.

Southampton welcome the Reds to St Mary’s on Friday, with the Saints aiming to maintain a five-point gap between them and the bottom three.

Liverpool have just six league games left this season, with City scheduled to take on Cardiff City on Wednesday.
