Details of what Mohamed Salah’s new contract at Liverpool could look like have emerged.

The Egyptian forward’s current deal at Anfield is set to expire at the end of next season, although he is now thought to be on the verge of signing a new contract with the club. Rumours this week have suggested that the two parties are on the brink of an agreement that could keep Liverpool’s star man at the club for a little while longer.

It comes as a VAR official who Jurgen Klopp has a bitter history with has been chosen for Sunday’s crunch Premier League clash with Manchester City. And the Reds survived a scare in Benfica to claim a two-goal advantage in their Champions League quarter-final ahead of the second leg at Anfield.

Benfica talking points

Luis Diaz marked his return to Portugal with a crucial late goal to give Liverpool a 3-1 lead over Benfica to take back to Anfield for their Champions League quarter-final second leg.

Goals from Ibrahima Konate, Sadio Mane and Diaz were enough to secure the win, which was far from straightforward after Darwin Nunez scored for the hosts to set up a nervy second half. But Diaz netted in the 87th minute as he rounded the Benfica goalkeeper to slot home an angled shot following Naby Keita’s through ball to give the Reds the momentum heading into the second leg.

It was a game full of talking points, including Mane’s central role, Konate’s Jekyll and Hyde display and a new Liverpool record being set.

The Reds manager ended up confronting Tierney after his side’s 2-2 draw with Tottenham earlier in the season, as he accused the official of having a “problem” with him. It came after the referee waved away penalty claims from the Reds after Diogo Jota was bundled over in Spurs the area.
