Liverpool icon Kenny Dalglish has labelled the suggestion that the Premier League season could be ruled null and void as ‘totally out of order’ and has called for football to be delayed as long as necessary.

Fixtures are currently postponed until 4 April due to the coronavirus outbreak, and with complete uncertainty over what will happen with the spread of the disease, there is the real possibility it could be postponed beyond that.

West Ham CEO Karren Brady has even gone as far as saying ‘the only fair and reasonable thing to do is declare the whole season null and void.’

However, Dalglish vehemently disagrees, believing Liverpool, who sit 25 points clear at the top of the Premier League table, should not be denied the title.

‘What must definitely not happen is for the 2019-20 campaign to be declared null and void,’ Dalglish wrote for The Sunday Post. ‘That would not be fair, and any person with football at heart would admit that would be totally out of order.

‘Would any person without an agenda really think it would be the most-sensible outcome to deny Liverpool their chance of winning the title after doing fantastically well in their 29 league games so far to build up a 25-point lead over Manchester City with nine games remaining?

‘Of course not. Nobody can allow the hard work to count for nothing. So let’s do away with any of this talk, and try to use our time and energy wisely.’

Sporting events across the globe have been cancelled, with next to no sport going on this weekend outside of the Gibraltar Open snooker, a couple of horse racing meets and some darts from Barnsley.

Dalglish has called on the government to let people know what to expect in the coming weeks and months, and if football has to be postponed past 4 April, then so be it.

‘Like the rest of the us, I have no idea when the world will settle down and there will be some kind of normality back to our daily routines. But the authorities need to show patience and strong leadership,’ said the legendary Scot.

‘It could well be football is closed down for four weeks, and we resume in the middle of April, or towards the end of that month.

‘There needs to be guidance and instruction on when competitive football will resume.’

Liverpool’s next fixture is due to be away at Manchester City on Sunday 5 April.
