Andy Robertson’s return to pre-season training has been delayed after the Liverpool left-back underwent surgery on his hand.

The Champions League holders confirmed the left-back, who played a pivotal role in his side’s success last season, picked up an infection but is expected to be fit enough to travel with the rest of Jurgen Klopp’s first team squad to the United states next week for the upcoming tour.

Liverpool began their pre-season schedule with a thumping 6-0 win over Tranmere in midweek and continue their preparations with a trip to Bradford tomorrow before friendlies against Borussia Dortmund, Sporting Lisbon, Napoli and Sevilla.

Robertson established himself as one of Europe’s finest left-backs last season, offering defensive solidity and representing a key attacking outlet.

The Scotland international’s understudy, Alberto Moreno, departed on a free transfer at the end of last season and the Reds are yet to sign a replacement.

After spending heavily in the transfer market in recent years, Klopp is likely to be more circumspect this summer and thus far has recruited only 17-year-old Dutch centre-half Sepp van den Berg.

Liverpool are also hopeful of agreeing a deal for Fulham’s teenage starlet Harvey Elliott but a compensation fee is likely to be agreed by a tribunal.

Outlining his plans for what remains of the summer transfer window, Klopp said after the win against Tranmere: ‘Rhian Brewster, [Alex] Oxlade-Chamberlain didn’t play last year, all the young boys today are all new players for us so that’s all good.

‘The transfer market is open, I don’t know exactly until when [August 8].

‘The whole of Europe had the wonderful idea to close the transfer window early and the only country that did it was England! We close it three weeks before all the others.

‘So yeah, we will see what we do, I don’t think it will be the biggest transfer window of all time.’
