Liverpool fans say two things about Van Dijk after UEFA award win over Ronaldo and Messi

Liverpool fans were absolutely delighted that Virgil van Dijk was named the UEFA men’s 2018-19 Player of the Year and tweeted in their droves about two things in particular concerning the towering Dutchman.

After the 2019-20 Champions League group stage draw was conducted in Monaco on Thursday, Virgil van Dijk was crowned the Player of the Year for last season.

Liverpool, of course, went on to win the competition by beating Tottenham in the final in Madrid last summer.

The Reds secured a sixth European Cup in doing so and Van Dijk missed just one match throughout their victorious run to the Spanish capital.

And Van Dijk’s contributions to Liverpool’s triumph last term saw him come out on top against Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo in the running for the gong.

Van Dijk – the Man of the Match in the final – was also named the Champions League’s Defender of the Season, while team-mate Alisson Becker won the award for Goalkeeper of the Season.

And Liverpool fans were elated for their centre-back, labelling him the stand-alone best player in world football on Twitter after claiming the gong.

“Confirmed: Best in the world,” wrote one in response to the news.

Another declared: “Virgil van Dijk, best player in the world.”

“VIRGIL VAN COLOSSUS DIJK. BEST IN THE WORLD. GET IN!!!” said one excited Reds supporter.

Another wrote: “I know people hate Chris Sutton but people took the mick when he said Van Dijk was the best player in the world about a year ago.”

One fan said: “People say Van Dijk isn’t the best defender in the world. They’re spot on. He’s the best PLAYER in the world.”

And another enthused: “Virgil van Dijk, best Footballer in the world. Nice.”

But Liverpool fans are also now convinced that Van Dijk will now also overcome the likes of Messi, Ronaldo and even Alisson for the 2019 Ballon d’Or.

The ceremony for the prestigious award, presented by France Football, takes place in December with both Messi and Ronaldo having won it a record five times apiece.

Van Dijk was already the bookmakers’ favourite to beat the pair and clinch the honour for the first time, but Liverpool fans are now adamant the result is inevitable.

“Ballon D’or next Big Virg,” reacted one.

Another wrote: “Ballon dor incoming.”

“Ballon d’Or soon for Van Dijk,” declared another.

Boyhood Liverpool fan and former Hull midfielder David Meyler meanwhile said: “Buzzing for the big man. VVD will surely win the Ballon D’OR now!”

Elsewhere, Messi was named Forward of the Season and Frenkie de Jong the Midfielder of the Season.
