Liverpool could offload Xherdan Shaqiri this summer and are keeping tabs on Villarreal starlet Samuel Chukwueze as a potential replacement, who has enjoyed a breakout year.

The Reds are not expected to be busy in the transfer market, having spent big in previous windows, and will only sanction high-profile moves for players who are clear upgrades on their current starting XI – which isn’t easy to do.

They are, however, keen to improve the options available to Jurgen Klopp within the rest of the squad, and, according to Goal.com, that could see Shaqiri moved on.

Despite his impact in the comeback win over Barcelona, and his late assist against Newcastle, there is a feeling that the Swiss star is ‘out of step’ with what Klopp wants from his players tactically.

While Liverpool are not actively looking to find a buyer, a good offer would be enough to convince them to let Shaqiri leave.

The 27-year-old only scored six times and assisted five goals in 30 appearances in all competitions, and Liverpool want someone to apply more pressure to their existing front three.

Lightning-quick Villarreal youngster Chukwueze has therefore emerged as an intriguing option, providing both depth and, at just 20 years old, the potential to develop even further.

The newly capped Nigeria international enjoyed a breakout campaign in La Liga, scoring five times in 19 starts, while he also impressed in the Europa League.

His versatility would also appeal to Liverpool, given that he has played across the frontline this season and as an attacking midfielder, though Villarreal will do all they can to keep him at the club for at least one more season.
