Liverpool are considering offering a short-term deal to free agent Andy Lonergan after Alisson suffered an injury blow on the opening day of the new Premier League season.

Brazil international Alisson was one of Europe’s best goalkeepers throughout the 2019-20 campaign and helped Liverpool win the Champions League and finish second in the Premier League.

The 26-year-old could be set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines, however, after injuring his calf while taking a goal kick during Liverpool’s 4-1 win over Norwich City on Friday evening.

Summer signing Adrian replaced Alisson in goal and the former West Ham star will likely be given an extended run in Liverpool’s team as Alisson recovers.

Jurgen Klopp may be concerned about his goalkeeping options, however, with former reserve goalkeeper Simon Mignolet leaving Anfield to join Club Brugge this summer.

Irish youngster Caoimhin Kelleher is also currently recovering from surgery and may not be ready to feature on the bench for the Reds.

As a result, the Evening Standard say Klopp will consider handing free agent Lonergan a short-team deal that will cover the early stages of the season.

Despite Alisson’s injury, Liverpool scored four first-half goals to smash Norwich and get their 2019-20 campaign off to the perfect start at Anfield.

Speaking after the win, Klopp said: ‘For 60 minutes we looked very sharp, then we have to control the game a bit more.

‘Norwich have all my respect – they stayed cheeky, they enjoyed their football.

‘The players had a break (over the summer). For the body it was long enough, nobody asked for longer, so they didn’t lose a lot of their physical standards.

‘We have to be a bit smart for the next two games, we have to make a few decisions and try to win both of those games, which will be difficult.’
