Jurgen Klopp is optimistic James Milner will be fit for Liverpool’s opening match of the 2019-20 Premier League season.

Reds vice-captain Milner missed the Community Shield clash with Manchester City on Sunday as a precaution after suffering a minor muscle injury.

In Milner’s absence, Liverpool were beaten on penalties by Premier League champions City.

Klopp expects 33-year-old Milner to resume full training in the next couple of days and is hopeful he will be available for Liverpool’s Premier League opener against Norwich City on Friday.

‘I would say yes,’ Klopp said when asked whether he expected Milner to feature at Anfield on Friday night. ‘It was a minor muscle injury.

‘I would say he can probably train tomorrow, although I am not 100 per cent sure. For today it did not work out, but I think by at least Tuesday he can train.’

Manchester City, who finished two points ahead of Liverpool last season after a grueling title race, took the lead in the Community Shield clash at Wembley through England star Raheem Sterling.

The woodwork was hit three times in the second half and Champions League winners Liverpool drew level with 13 minutes remaining when Joel Matip headed home Virgil van Dijk’s cross.

The fixture went to penalties and Gabriel Jesus scored the decisive kick after Georginio Wijnaldum’s effort was saved by City goalkeeper Claudio Bravo.

On his team’s performance, Klopp added: ‘Wow, it was a really good performance, a powerful one in the second half.

‘Both teams had a similar pre-season. I spoke to Kevin de Bruyne after the game and we both said we don’t really know where we are yet.

‘The least we deserved was the equaliser, one save decided it and I cannot be disappointed today.

‘The performance was much more important than a win. We know we are still here, we can still play proper football.’
