Liverpool and Tottenham make Bruno Fernandes transfer decision as Man Utd stay hopeful

Fernandes scored 31 goals from midfield last season, skippering Sporting to two domestic cups.

The Portugal international, who helped his country to the Nations League trophy in early June, has four years left on his contract, and is worth in the region of £62.2m (€70m).

United showed interest in the playmaker earlier this summer and have held informal meetings with Fernandes’ agent Miguel Pinho in London, according to ESPN.

They were part of a packed field chasing the 24-year-old but now appear to be in pole position because Manchester City, Tottenham and Liverpool have ostensibly distanced themselves from a move.

United have other targets in midfield such as the more Newcastle defensive midfielder Sean Longstaff, who would cost around £25m.

If Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is set on signing Fernandes he may have to fund the deal through player sales, which could come in the form of Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku.

The Norwegian does not want to sell either player but may need to make a sacrifice.

“A lot of their transfer strategy depends on what happens with [Pogba and Lukaku],” Sky Sports reporter Kaveh Solhekol said.

“But other players will be coming into United. The next one, if not Maguire, could be Bruno Fernandes.

“The Sporting midfield player has been playing so well for Portugal. A lot of big clubs are after him and his agent says that United have been in touch.”

Sporting manager Marcel Keizer admitted earlier this week to Portuguese newspaper Record: “I want Bruno Fernandes to stay, but everyone knows the current situation.

It’s going to be difficult to keep him. He’s on vacation, we’ll see what happens.”
