Huddersfield XI: Lossl, Smith, Schindler, Kongolo, Durm, Stankovic, Hogg, Bacuna, Mbenza, Mounie, Grant

  • Naby Keita opens the scoring inside 15 seconds – Salah assist
  • Sadio Mane heads in second from Robertson cross
  • Mohamed Salah grabs a third before the break with chipped finish

LIVERPOOL 3-0 HUDDERSFIELD

53: Ouch! Silence around Anfield as Virgil van Dijk rolls his ankle when challenging for an aerial duel. The big defender stays on the deck before eventually getting back to his feet to rapturous applause. I’ll keep an eye on him.

51: Close! Sadio Mane and Daniel Sturridge both challenge for the same ball and get themselves in a right muddle. The winger eventually takes charge and loops an effort over the crossbar.

48: I don’t think Huddersfield have touched the ball since the resumption. Liverpool keeping the ball sensibly in the middle of the park without really causing much danger.

Stick or twist for Jurgen Klopp? Goal difference could be a major factor come the end of the season.

LIVERPOOL 3-0 HUDDERSFIELD

45: And we’re back underway folks. No changes for either side.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was warming up on the pitch during the break. He’s not entered the fray just yet – but you’d expect him to play some part eventually.

Twitter round-up

Maya: Why is there a suggestion that Salah has had a poor season? I’m kinda confused. Man just scored his 20th goal now.

Kolo: Peerless football. Jurgen Klopp wasn’t wrong when he said his four Players on the Team of the Year could easily be joined by another seven.

Jon: Salah!!!!!!!!!!!!! 3-0 what a goal. Doing our job and thats all we can do to put the pressure back onto City. Would be nice to see Ox get some minutes under he’s belt and get a good reception from the crowd.

Enough exclamation marks, Jon?!?!?!?!?!?!

Mo Salah magic

HT: Mohamed Salah has become only the third Liverpool player to score 20+ Premier League goals in consecutive seasons for the club, after Robbie Fowler (1994-95 and 1995-96) and Luis Suárez (2012-13 and 2013-14).

LIVERPOOL 3-0 HUDDERSFIELD

HT: Shall we bother playing the second half? Oh right, that goal difference…

LIVERPOOL 3-0 HUDDERSFIELD | SALAH

46: It’s three! Liverpool have grabbed a third in first-half stoppage-time though one of the top 100 most influential people on the planet.

Mohamed Salah races onto Trent Alexander-Arnold’s lofted pass and lifts a beautiful, cool finish over the on-rushing Jonas Lossl.

44: Close! Rapid build-up play from the hosts. Henderson to Mane to Robertson, whose cross is on a plate for Salah. The Egyptian’s flick is blocked before Henderson skies it from eight yards.

43: Slight annoyance from Salah, who is completely unmarked yet ignored by the advancing Mane. The winger goes for goal himself and is quickly snuffed out by three blue and white shirts.

40: Close! Sadio Mane plucks a fizzed diagonal ball out of the sky and brings it under his spell effortlessly. He nudges it back for the onrushing Daniel Sturridge to strike, but Huddersfield recover.

38: Mohamed Salah looks to cut inside from the right. He beats one… two… three… before reaching the byline and seeing his prodded effort blocked for a corner.

Trent takes… Jonas Lossl collects.

35: Liverpool are utterly dominant now. The Huddersfield bite isn’t looking very sharp right now with Steve Mounie and Karlan Grant struggling to get involved.

33: Liverpool’s goal difference is now +61. Manchester City’s is +67. That gap could be significantly reduced tonight if the Reds continue at this rate!

30: It’s the perfect scenario for manager Jurgen Klopp, who will be free to rest his biggest stars with Barcelona on the horizon.

I’ve just heard Daniel Sturridge’s name for the first time tonight. He collects the ball from Mohamed Salah before firing one into orbit.

28: Andrew Robertson is just the third defender to assist at least 10 goals in a single Premier League season, after Leighton Baines (11, 2010-11) and Andy Hinchcliffe (11, 1994-95).

25: Who fancies a Huddersfield comeback? PaddyPower are offering 425/1. I think that could offer 420,000/1 and It still wouldn’t be worth a quid.

LIVERPOOL 2-0 HUDDERSFIELD | MANE

23: Sadio Mane doubles Liverpool’s lead and safely wraps up three points for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

The winger finds space in the penalty area and meets Andrew Robertson’s sublime cross with a downward header past Jonas Lossl.

I believe that’s assist number 12 for Robbo this campaign.

21: Liverpool have regained their composure now. They are starting to create a few more sustained attacks with Mohamed Salah looking lively.

A neat back heel nearly finds Sadio Mane on the penalty spot but Christopher Schindler thumps it upfield.

20: Huddersfield fans losing their Premier League status but not their sense of humour. “How s**t must you be, it’s only one-nil.”

17: Jonas Lossl shanks a wind-assisted clearance that goes backwards and out for a Liverpool corner. The fizzed delivery is flicked over by the stooping Virgil van Dijk.

14: Cracking play… from Huddersfield! I don’t know what on earth is happening tonight – but the visitors have been by far the better side as Karlan Grant wins their third corner of the evening. Liverpool just about hack it clear.

Van Dijk has a gold old fashioned shout at his colleagues to sort it out.

11: Huddersfield’s rally hasn’t dampened Liverpool spirits – supporters haven’t stopped singing since the first whistle and it doesn’t sound like they’ll be stopping anytime soon!

8: It feels strange to say that a title-chasing side who have scored after 15 seconds are under the cosh – but Liverpool really are right now!

Huddersfield have been camped inside Liverpool’s half. Perhaps the ‘we might as well go for it’ attitude will help Jan Siewert’s side.

5: That was Liverpool’s quickest ever Premier League goal. Currently recorded as the 14th second of the game. That’s 100 goals in all competitions for Jurgen Klopp’s side this season.

3: Ey up! Huddersfield have had a chance.

Karlan Grant drives down the left before playing a neat pass to Jon Gorenc-Stankovic in the area. The midfielder’s curling effort is deflected into the side netting.

LIVERPOOL 1-0 HUDDERSFIELD | KEITA

1: Well… I didn’t hold out much hope for Huddersfield before the game – but I thought they would keep it tight for longer than 15 seconds!

Liverpool have taken the lead virtually from kick-off as Mohamed Salah intercepts a woeful pass. The Egyptian slips it to Naby Keita, who places a low drive into the far corner.

Don’t worry Shane Long, your record is safe…

LIVERPOOL 1-0 HUDDERSFIELD

1: And we’re underway folks. Good atmosphere and plenty of banners inside Anfield tonight. I suspect they are expecting to steamroll relegated Huddersfield. Patience may be required…

In the house…

19:58: Liverpool’s principal owner John W Henry is at Anfield tonight to watch Jurgen Klopp’s men attempt to regain top spot in the Premier League table.

Don’t blame him – who wouldn’t want to watch one of the world’s 100 most influential people in action…

Ashley Barnes…

19:54: I’ve been out of the office for one day and hundreds of Liverpool supporters have changed their Twitter pictures to Burnley striker Ashley Barnes. What the hell happened?!

I suppose it’s not a lost cause with Burnley having beaten the reigning Premier League champions in each of the last five seasons.

Ten-minute warning

19:50: Sky Sports commentator Martin Tyler is wearing a rather snazzy Canada Goose coat up in the gantry this evening. Looks a wee bit chilly up on Merseyside with a fair amount of wind.

Just under 10 minutes until we’re underway at Anfield. Should be a walk in the park, right?

‘Tough game’

19:48: Huddersfield head coach Jan Siewert, speaking on Sky Sports: “It’s a tough game. But the pressure is all on Liverpool’s side because they are trying to win the league. We will just try and make problems for them. We have our ideas.”

He also refused to say how he was going to stop Liverpool from winning. The managerial equivalent to the dog ate my homework…

Twitter round-up

Tom: Daniel Sturridge starting is a weird one but it’s not often that Bobby gets a rest. Would love to see Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain come off the bench at some point of course.

Richard: The massive threat for Liverpool tonight is complacency. Crowd acting like it’s a case of ‘how many’ won’t be helpful. Need to work as normal and then earn rewards.

Steve: What ever happens over the next 3 games we should be so proud of what this team has achieved. We’ve gone toe to toe with a great Man City side and were gonna take it down to the wire.

Drought…

19:40: We often talk about players or clubs going through a goal droughts against other clubs – but nothing compares to this fixture.

Huddersfield haven’t scored in any of their last eight meetings with Liverpool in all competitions, since a 1-1 draw at Anfield in the second division in April 1962. Chris Balderstone scored the only goal for the Terriers that day.

I assume we all remember where we were when Chris Balderstone grabbed that infamous goal…

Ton up

19:38: Well these stats are quite frankly ridiculous. And that’s exactly why I’ve made him my Fantasy Football captain tonight.

Mohamed Salah makes his 100th appearance for Liverpool tonight. He’s found the net 67 times and assisted 28 goals. Crazy.

Brendan the landlord

19:35: Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers will hope Jurgen Klopp continues to pay his rent on time even if he is unable to help his tenant in the Premier League title race.

Liverpool manager Klopp rents the house on Merseyside that Rodgers lived in during his time in charge at Anfield.

The German joked on Thursday that he would withhold payment in an attempt to help motivate Leicester ahead of their game against Manchester City in 10 days’ time.

“I don’t think it’s a secret (that I’m his landlord). It has been well-documented,” said Rodgers. “I saw what he said, he is a funny guy. He has been a very, very good tenant. I don’t need to keep an eye on him. He always pays up on time. He’s very good!

“We have a game before that but my job is to do Leicester a favour. Every game is important. These are exciting games in this last period of the season and we will look to give our best and finish the season as strongly as we can.”

‘Sturridge works well in tight spaces’

19:30: Gary Neville’s had his say on the inclusion of Daniel Sturridge – and he thinks the striker will enjoy himself.

“I think because Huddersfield will play deep, Liverpool will have most of the ball, you do need sometimes someone with a little bit of creativity,” Neville said.

“And I think Daniel Sturridge works well in tight spaces. If this was a game away from home in Barcelona and Firmino wasn’t fit then definitely Origi would play.

“He’d have more energy, more pressing, more runs in behind. I think tonight, because it’s Huddersfield, Liverpool will dominate the game.

“I think it will suit Sturridge and he is a goalscorer.”

Twitter round-up

Laurie: I know he’s not the player he once was but let’s get behind Daniel Sturridge tonight. It’s likely going to be his last start in a Liverpool shirt and one of his final appearances so let him show the talent we all know he has. Go out with a bang Studge!

Ally: No point risking Roberto Firmino with Barcelona next week. Great to see Daniel Sturridge getting a run out in what could be his final game for the club.

Bob: Sturridge!!!? – remember me! – first start in 2019- happy for him and hope he takes his chance! – back from injuries Ox/Gomez on the bench adding more class and quality options!!-like to see Shaq involved at some point also!

So… forget the SAS. It’s time for the mighty SMS to stake a claim for best abbreviated strike force…

Nice to see you – to see you…

19:20: Jan Siewert will finally get to meet Jurgen Klopp tonight.

Siewert, 36, followed a similar path to Klopp into English football from Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund and revealed the Liverpool manager has been a major influence on his career.

“I’ve never met him personally. Obviously I know him but we’ve never spoken,” said Siewert. “Obviously Jurgen is a fantastic manager and one of the best in the world. Although I’ve never met him, he’s a great guy and everybody realises what he’s doing with Liverpool.

“Of course we had a look at what he did and the way he influenced the German way of playing and at Dortmund. It was for me a big part of my coaching career.”

Awww, football friends…

He’s back…

19:15: Not quite sure what’s more surprising – Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain returning or Daniel Sturridge starting.

Sturridge is making his first league start since 5 December when he appeared against Burnley. He has scored once in his last 10 league starts – against Huddersfield in October 2017.

Asked about the Ox, Klopp said: “Unbelievable. We had to think about it when we wrote the names on the team-sheet – what do we call him? It’s that long ago. But it’s really nice and good to have him back. It’s really good.”

Team News – Huddersfield

19:10: Huddersfield boss Jan Siewert makes two changes from the side who were beaten by Watford.

21-year-old striker Karlan Grant starts in attack with Aaron Mooy absent having picked up a knock last week.

The other change sees on Stankovic replace Elias Kachunga.

‘A little muscle issue’

19:07: Jurgen Klopp has just spoken to Sky Sports ahead of tonight’s clash and confirmed Roberto Firmino’s absence.

The German tactician says ‘it’s a small muscle issue’ and didn’t think it was anything too serious. Case closed.

“Yesterday after training he mentioned a little muscle injury. It’s not a big thing but enough to leave him out today,” Klopp said.

Team News – Liverpool

19:05: Ch-ch-ch-changes for Jurgen Klopp – and they are a nightmare for Fantasy Football players.

Daniel Sturridge makes his first Premier League start of 2019 – Roberto Firmino does not figure in the 18, as reported earlier.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, out with a knee ligament injury since April 2018, is on the bench while Dejan Lovren also returns in place of Joel Matip.

Starting XI…

19:00: And here is the official confirmation. These ITK accounts on Twitter must be breathing a sigh of relief. Roberto Firmino is absent through injury with Daniel Sturridge taking his place in attack.

Liverpool XI: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Lovren, Van Dijk, Robertson, Wijnaldum, Keita, Henderson, Salah, Sturridge, Mane.

Subs: Mignolet, Milner, Gomez, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Shaqiri, Origi, Matip.

Huddersfield XI: Lossl, Smith, Schindler, Kongolo, Durm, Stankovic, Hogg, Bacuna, Mbenza, Mounie, Grant.

Subs: Coleman, Kachunga, Diakhaby, Lowe, Pritchard, Zanka, Daly.

Twitter round-up

Mike: If Man City win the league over us then fair play to them. It’s been a brilliant ride and Liverpool are in a tremendous position for the future. Just happy we are playing football at the highest level.

Birdy: Man City and Liverpool will dominate for years. Chelsea about to lose their stars and Ole will buy disastrously just like he did at Cardiff.

I think you are spot-on there, Birdy. Huge rebuilding jobs for Manchester United and Chelsea to even be considered contenders.

Silver lining…

18:53: So the Liverpool Echo’s James Pearce has confirmed that Roberto Firmino WILL miss tonights clash.

“The Brazil striker reported to Melwood as usual on Friday morning but wasn’t part of the matchday squad which later assembled at the city’s Hope Street Hotel,” Pearce wrote.

However… there is some good news.

And that’s the return of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who returns to Liverpool’s matchday squad for the first time since 24 April 2018.

Afternoon…

18:50: Hello everyone and welcome to our LIVE coverage of the Premier League.

Hope you stayed off Twitter today. It’s been an absolute mad house of injury news, conspiracy theories and chaotic investigation.

Why? It’s all down to Roberto Firmino…

Rumours were circulating that the Brazilian would miss tonight’s clash with a groin injury – but it somehow spawned into a season-ending injury.

Just another day on Twitter, right?

Anyway, Jurgen Klopp’s side will be looking to beat Huddersfield at Anfield and then sit back and hope Burnley can do them a favour on Sunday, unlike rivals Manchester United did on Wednesday night.

City’s one-point lead means destiny is in their hands, but they face another stern examination at Turf Moor, against a Burnley side who have won three and drawn one of their last four matches.

We’ll have that official team news shortly. Standby.
