LIVERPOOL 2-1 LYON

HT: Not bad from Liverpool. Not too bad at all. The Reds look their usual exciting selves going forward but uncharacteristically vulnerable at the back.

42: Close! You’d back Mohamed Salah to finish that every day of the week. Rhian Brewster sets him free with an arrowed pass but the Egyptian loses control inside the box.

39: Youthful exuberance we’ll call this as Hoever earns himself a booking with a crunching tackle on Aouar. Booked.

36: Lallana is another looking sharp. He’s pulling the strings in midfield, knitting together play in a very tidy fashion. He threads it over to Mo, who… yep you guessed it… fires wide.

33: I must say I’m very impressed with Hoever down this right channel. He feeds Salah, who once again takes it himself before firing wide.

30: Roberto Firmino and Xherdan Shaqiri are done. Just a brief workout for them today as James Milner and Rhian Brewster replace them on the half-hour mark.

27: Naby Keita’s low cross looks certain to be swept home by Mohamed Salah but Andersen does well to make the block.

24: Say hello to former Manchester United defender Rafael. He’s on after an injury to Marcal. Mohamed Salah then takes a whack on the back inside the box but the referee isn’t interested. You’ve seen them given.

LIVERPOOL 2-1 LYON | ANDERSEN

21: I didn’t realise these Swiss fans were so up for it! There’s smoke bombs and chants going on everywhere!

Ki-Jana Hoever, who signed a new long-term contract today, drills a cross in from the right and summer signing Andersen shins it backwards into his own net. Cracking finish…

20: I didn’t realise these Swiss fans were so up for it! There’s smoke bombs and chants going on everywhere!

LIVERPOOL 1-1 LYON | FIRMINO

17: GOAL! Liverpool are level thanks to Roberto Firmino. How they’ve missed him!

Lyon fail to clear Larouci’s cross from the left channel and Firmino collects. He spins inside the box before drilling it into the far corner.

13: Liverpool are being carved open with ease here in Geneva. It’s simply play from Lyon, who are able to walk through the midfield at every opportunity.

Bertrand Traore is the latest player to stroll through and drag one tamely at Alisson. Mohamed Salah cuts inside from the left before shanking it miles over.

10: This ridiculously attacking line-up is doing exactly what it says on the tin. But all the forward play is leaving them vulnerable at the back. A simple ball forward finds Memphis Depay, who makes a yard on Joe Gomez before firing wide.

7: Close! Liverpool nearly level just two minutes after the opener. Harry Wilson’s effort takes a wicked deflection and nearly sneaks past Lopes.

Oh, I forgot to mention that Alisson was given a yellow card for the foul. Bit harsh in a friendly – but thems the rules.

LIVERPOOL 0-1 LYON | DEPAY

4: GOAL! Memphis Depay doesn’t mess around with the spot-kick. He sends Alisson the wrong way with a thunderous strike.

PENALTY TO LYON

3: Ah… well Alisson will not want to watch that again.

The Brazilian spills a routine cross and fumbles around trying to collect it. Bertrand Traore nips in and the goalkeeper brings him down.

2: There was a rendition of YNWA before kick off… no Lyon anthem though. Those eight Lyon supporters will be livid.

As expected, Xherdan Shaqiri, Adam Lallana and Naby Keita are all sharing responsibilities in midfield with the former venturing forward a bit more.

LIVERPOOL 0-0 LYON

1: It’s a beautiful afternoon in Geneva, Switzerland. Plenty of seats sold and most are wearing red shirts. Let’s see if Liverpool can boost their confidence ahead of Sunday’s Community Shield clash with Manchester City.

Last time out…

17:55: Just stumbled over the last time these two sides played. Any guesses?

It was November 2009 in the Champions League group stages. Liverpool drew 1-1 with Ryan Babel on the scoresheet.

The side that day? Agger, Babel, Benayoun, Carragher, Insua, Kuyt, Kyrgiakos, Lucas, Mascherano, N’Gog, Reina, Torres, Voronin.

Elsewhere…

17:50: Plenty of action elsewhere this evening with no less than four top-six sides involved.

Arsenal travel to Angers, who will be celebrating win, lose or draw because of their 15 per cent sell-on clause in Nicolas Pepe’s contract.

Chelsea travel to RB Salzburg and Tottenham face Bayern Munich in the final of the prestigious Audi Cup Final. What a time to be alive.

Not in control…

17:45: Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp claims he did not feel in control immediately before last season, even though they went on to win the Champions League.

So this time around he is not overly concerned after a difficult pre-season which sees his team without a win in four friendlies.

“Last year we didn’t feel in control but of course good results in pre-season give you confidence but that’s not the most important thing.

“The most important thing is you get the physical skills for a long, long season. Because during the season we only have to prepare for games, there’s not a lot of time to train.

“So you have to do what you have to do but it feels not too cool if you then play these strong opponents. We have time to improve and that’s what we will do.”

Lyon XI…

17:35: The Lyon side eventually arrives.

Plenty of names you’ll recognise including that of former Liverpool target Memphis Depay. The Dutch international was linked with the Reds last season but nothing materialised… as you you well know. Moussa Dembele and Bertrand Traore also start.

Lyon XI: Lopes, Dubois, Denayer, Andersen, Marçal, Mendes, Lucas, Aouar, B.Traore, Depay, Dembele.

Twitter round-up

Alex: We really need a win. We have had an awful pre-season and we could do with going into that Community Shield game against City on a high.

Ray: Larouci, Keita and Shaqiri are back am so happy. Mo, Bobby and Alisson too are back, today you’re gonna see how LFC will play when the top guys are here. And today Harry Wilson will have a chance to prove himself aside 2 of the best in the world.

Michael: Wonder if all these ‘fans’ crying about signings will shut up when we put four in against Manchester City on Sunday?!

The Community Shield…

17:20: Jose Mourinho counted it as a major trophy – Jurgen Klopp doesn’t see the point in turning up. There’s something in that, right?

Anyway, Klopp was not sure how much importance the Community Shield has in English football as he previewed the Wembley encounter.

“I don’t think we can expect to play our best game on Sunday with the pre-season we have had, but it’s not about that, it’s about winning a football game and there are different ways of doing that,” he said.

“I don’t know why people play this competition if it means nothing, why we don’t cancel it then? Because in Germany I won it five times and nobody mentions that but they play it every year. It’s the Super Cup, you win it and nobody cares, you lose it and some care.”

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp was also nominated or the men’s coach award following his Champions League heroics.

Transfers

17:00: Not really much to talk about on the transfer front I’m afraid.

In fact, 17-year-old Ki-Jana Hoever signing a new long-term contract is about as exciting as it gets.

Other headlines include Darren Bent advising Aston Villa to sign Harry Wilson, Ryan Kent being offered to Rangers and a few loose links to Timo Werner.

Twitter round-up

Toro: We MIGHT be able to get a better reading of the “give Wilson a chance” with the 1st team around him” barometer today.

Sam: I guess if we win 9-0 this preseason is forgotten. If we lose. Get Sadio Mane back early and pay him more.

Kopinion: Great to see Larouci back so quickly. This is a huge opportunity for him, Hoever & Wilson to impress playing alongside the likes of Salah, Keita, Firmino & Alisson. Hopefully we’ll see a much better performance than on Sunday, this is a very attacking line-up.

Team News – Liverpool

16:50: If you’re confused what formation Jurgen Klopp is playing – join the club. I think it could be a 4-2-3-1…

There’s no natural defensive midfielder in the starting XI – but I’d assume Naby Keita and Adam Lallana will be fulfilling that role.

Sheridan Shari or Harry Wilson will be playing the No. 10 role behind Roberto Firmino with Mohamed Salah out wide.

It’s good to see Yasser Larouci back in action after THAT challenge against Sevilla. He’s at full back with Ki-Jana Hoever on the opposite flank.

16:40: And here cometh the Liverpool starting XI. I see massive relief in the twitter comments section with Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Alisson all starting today’s friendly.

Subs: Mignolet, Lonergan, Fabinho, Van Dijk, Wijnaldum, Milner, Henderson, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Brewster, Robertson, Origi, Matip, Lewis, Duncan, Alexander-Arnold, Elliott, Van De Berg.

Afternoon

16:30: Hello everyone and welcome to our LIVE coverage of Liverpool vs Lyon.

Everyone feeling well? Splendid.

That’s the small talk done with – on to the real business.

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool entertain Lyon with big guns Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Alisson Becker all back in contention.

It’s been an extremely quiet summer for the Champions League winners, who have failed to complete any marquee signings and have underwhelmed in pre-season.

But surely today will be a different story with just four days until that Community Shield clash with Manchester City, right?
