LIVERPOOL 0-1 NEWCASTLE | WILLEMS (7)

Liverpool XI: Adrian, Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson, Fabinho, Wijnaldum, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Mane, Origi, Salah

Newcastle XI: Dubravka, Krafth, Lascelles, Schar, Dummett, Atsu, Hayden, Shelvey, Willems, Almiron, Joelinton

  • Jurgen Klopp makes two changes – Firmino and Henderson replaced by the Ox and Origi
  • Jonjo Shelvey starts in place of the injured Sean Longstaff for Steve Bruce’s Newcastle
  • Jetro Willems gives Newcastle a shock lead with a thunderbolt

LIVERPOOL 0-1 NEWCASTLE

26: Jamaal Lascelles to the rescue! Divock Origi is ready and waiting to convert Trent’s cross from the right but the Newcastle captain makes a vital interception.

24: A few moans, groans and whistles from the Liverpool supporters now as the frustration sets in. Newcastle simply look more up for this right now. The Reds are losing battles all over the pitch and look to be missing Roberto Firmino badly.

22: “Wheyyyyyy,” is the ironic cheer from Liverpool fans as Jonjo Shelvey attempt a David Beckham from inside his own half. The goalkeeper was off his line but Shelvey shanked it.

19: Sadio Mane glances Oxlade-Chamberlain’s cross over the Newcastle crossbar. Joelinton does the same at the other end a few moments later.

16: Newcastle looks very well drilled at the back. Liverpool have made a few tweaks tactically with Mohamed Salah drifting inside to find those pockets of space.

Corner to Liverpool. Van Dijk and Matip trundle forward… the Dutchman wins the header but Dubravka comes in with a right-hook to clear it.

13: Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain looks to galvanise his side with a solo effort but he’s fired narrowly wide of Dubravka’s right post.

10: How’s the response been? Well… unusually there’s barely been one. Still all very patient and slightly underwhelming from Jurgen Klopp’s side.

7: GOAL! Pick that one out! Anfield is silent after a stunning opener from Jetro Willems.

Liverpool are far too casual as Christian Atsu collects the ball 30-yards from goal. Trent Alexander-Arnold isn’t tracking the run from Jetro Willems and the Dutch international cuts inside before arrowing one past Adrian.

5: I would describe Liverpool’s approach as leisurely after five minutes. Jurgen Klopp’s side have had virtually 100 percent possession – switching flanks to find a bit of space. None found just yet.

3: Newcastle have set their stall out to defend. They’ve got everyone behind the ball in these opening stages. Same tactics as the Tottenham win with Joelinton tasked with taking pressure of the defenders.

Divock Origi hits the deck after a challenge with Miguel Almiron – but he’s fine to continue.

LIVERPOOL 0-0 NEWCASTLE

1: And we’re off! I know people say that Newcastle can take hope from their result against Tottenham – but a depleted Spurs aren’t Liverpool. My prediction? 3-0.

Here they come!

12:25: The players are just emerging from the tunnel to a packed and rather raucous Anfield. Divock Origi gives the young mascot a pat on the head — presumably for luck.

Beautiful afternoon for football. Beautiful afternoon for goals.

Twitter round-up

Paul: Big call for Klopp to bench Bobby Firmino, he’s been arguably LFC’s most important attacker since start of season. NUFC have form for being stubborn & hard to break down away from home.

Michael: Jonjo to get 3, Almiron a couple and you will hear the roar on the Tyne! But back in reality we need to be very organised, go back to the Rafa playbook and hang in there.

Just looked up the odds on that, Michael. It’s 49098/1 if you fancy it…

‘Bobby is probably ready’

12:15: Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp: “Of course, we have to think about these things. Jordan Henderson is ready, Bobby is probably ready, but it’s not about being ready – it’s a bigger picture and we have to think about that.

“We could have made more changes but we need the rhythm as well and it makes not too much sense. A lot of games are coming up.

“We did it with all, we respect Newcastle too much for rotating. We really want to have the best starting line-up we can have for the specific opponent and that’s what we thought is the right one.

“We could train with that group since Wednesday or so and that helps; OK, Fabinho came in a bit late but with all the others we could train since Wednesday. So that’s good and that’s what we try to use.”

Weather report

12:10: As a budding meteorologist and Michael Fish enthusiast – I’m duty-bound to provide you with a weather report from Anfield.

It’s sunny. And quite warm.

Just waiting for the offers to roll in from BBC and ITV weather…

Down memory lane

12:05: We can’t have this fixture pass without mentioning the incredible 4-3 match in 1996.

It derailed Newcastle’s Premier League title bid and SOME have said it changed the way English football is played. Don’t know about that myself.

Anyway, I thought you would like to know that this is the seventh highest scoring game in Premier League history with 151 goals in 48 games.

Only 10 needed to surpass the highest ever total set in the Arsenal vs Liverpool fixture. Fingers crossed!

Lunchtime KO?

12:00: I was asked by my boss to take a look into Jurgen Klopp’s record in Saturday lunchtime kick-offs.

What an assignment… Anyway, I found some mildly interesting data having trawled through years of results.

The German tactician has overseen 19 fixtures in the early Saturday slot since taking charge on October 8, 2015.

And his win percentage stands at 42% – a full 15% down on his fine overall victory ratio of 57.5% as Liverpool manager.

The Reds have played 19 12:30/12:45pm Saturday fixtures, winning eight, drawing seven and losing four – conceding 28 goals along the way.

Are you not entertained?!

Salah beef quashed

11:55: Are Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane enemies? Do they pass to each other? Are they both desperate to win the Golden Boot?

All of those questions have been settled this week with a wonderful tweet from the Egyptian. Enjoy!

Magical Mane

11:50: Sadio Mane has played 50 Premier League matches at Anfield without losing – 49 with Liverpool, one with Southampton (W40 D10 L0) – more than any other player has played on a ground without ending on the losing side in Premier League history.

Twitter reaction

Jonathan: I’m not surprised there’s a lot of people moaning about Roberto Firmino not starting but have some common sense and think about Napoli and Chelsea it makes total sense to rest him today Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane will be fresher than he is.

Empire: Interesting that Firmino is on the bench so he is fit to play. Divock Origi is actually in the team on merit now rather than as a replacement.

Callum: Of course I put Firmino in my dream dream and of course he gets benched, OF COURSE!!! #^&%^@!

I feel your pain, Callum. Of course…

Team news – Newcastle

11:40: Steven Bruce makes one change from the draw with Watford.

And that’s an enforced change after Sean Longstaff suffered a ‘freak’ ankle injury during training. Former Liverpool midfielder and everyone’s favourite pantomime villain Jonjo Shelvey starts.

Team news – Liverpool

11:35: Jurgen Klopp makes two changes from the side who beat Burnley before the international break.

Roberto Firmino and Jordan Henderson drop to the bench after their international exploits. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Divock Origi start.

I’m told that’s the Ox’s first start at Anfield since he ruptured his ACL against Roma in April 2018.

What’s on?

11:25: I’m glad you asked.

As I mention, we’ve got seven Premier League fixtures coming up this afternoon.

Those are: Liverpool vs Newcastle, Brighton vs Burnley, Manchester United vs Leicester, Sheffield United vs Southampton, Tottenham vs Crystal Palace, Wolves vs Chelsea and Norwich vs Manchester City.

Can you spot an upset? I’ve got my eye on one or two for the weekly losing acca…

Morning…

11:20: Welcome to our LIVE coverage of Liverpool vs Newcastle from Anfield.

Yes, that’s the same Anfield where Newcastle have failed to win in the top-flight for 25 years.

The Premier League returns after 13 days in hibernation with a bumper seven fixtures coming up over the next 10 hours.

Do you want to discuss the international break? Good. Me neither.

Liverpool are overwhelming 1/6 favourites to beat Steve Bruce’s side and maintain their perfect start to the Premier League campaign.

The Reds have already secured maximum points against Norwich, Southampton, Arsenal and Burnley – scoring a healthy 12 goals in the process.
