Little Simz is aiming to sample Michelle Obama on a future track after America’s former First Lady championed her music.

The 26-year-old Londoner was gobsmacked last month when both Michelle and her hubby, former US president Barack, spotlighted her music.

‘It’s very, very surreal,’ Simz told Guilty Pleasures after Michelle shared her track Pink Youth on a ‘Black Girl Magic’ playlist, while Barack highlighted One Life, Might Live as his song of the summer.

She added: ‘To know that my music would migrate from north London to the Obama household is insane to get my head around. But in the same breath, it makes sense, I guess? I think they’ve got great taste in music!’

Simz’s career just gets bigger and bigger after she scooped the best album award for Grey Area at a socially distanced ceremony for The Ivors.

Celebrating with co-writer Inflo, the star said: ‘I feel good. I feel humbled.’ Robbed of the chance to milk the acclaim on the red carpet, she said: ‘I wish there was a ceremony to go to, but you know. It’s all good either way. Having applause would have been great!’

She said attending the event would have given her an opportunity to approach some of the other nominees including rapper Dave, who won the best contemporary song prize for Black.

‘Doing something with Dave at some point would be really cool. I’ve worked with Stormzy before but it would be nice to touch base with him and maybe do something,’ she added.

The Irish lad confided: ‘I felt objectified after Normal People. It’s to be expected, given the intimacy of my scenes, but it doesn’t make it easier. I daren’t read some of the intense DMs I receive. But it’s not enough to put me off the industry.’

Explaining what he might be doing instead, Mescal — who lives in east London — said: ‘I almost joined the army at 16. But my love for Gaelic football and acting kept me in Ireland.’

Meanwhile, Edgar-Jones is feeling pressure about her own appearance after lockdown forced her to let a friend cut her fringe, which gained iconic status on the BBC3 show.

‘I owe everything to my fringe,’ said the 22-year-old beauty, who dates Game of Thrones star Tom Varey in real life.
