Listen to Zayn Malik sing 'A Whole New World' from the new Aladdin

Surely, there’d be a pretty decent crossover in a Venn diagram of One Direction fans and people who love Disney films. If you’re in that sweet pop culture territory, I’m about to make your day.

Zayn Malik – former One Direction member, now full-time Gigi Hadid accessory – has just released a cover of the most iconic song from Aladdin.

Disney just released a snippet from his duet of “A Whole New World” with singer Zhavia Ward on their Twitter, ahead of the live action remake of Aladdin coming out on the 22nd May.

Apparently, this version of that epic, timeless ballad is going to play over the end credits of the film, so you can save your inevitable Disney-film sob for then.

Obviously, because this concerns a former member of the boyband One Direction, people on the internet have opinions. A lot of them, predictably, have suggested that Zayn should’ve been cast in the lead role in the film – despite him not being an actor (unless you count the many years he pretended to love making pop music with four other men).

“Zayn should be Aladdin,” said one Twitter user, presumably an avid Zayn fan. “They should’ve just made zayn aladdin but whatever,” wrote another. “Been saying this since the trailer dropped,” came a reply. “My biggest same,” said someone else.

As it is, the role of Aladdin is played by Mena Massoud. Naomi Scott will play Princess Jasmine and Will Smith is the genie. The film, which is surely one of Disney’s most iconic films, will be out later this month. They can show us the world… Shining, shimmering splendid.
