Lisa Nandy for Labour leader: Who is Lisa Nandy, is she a Brexiteer?

Lisa Nandy could be the next Labour leader, as the MP announced she was “seriously considering” running for Jeremy Corbyn’s role. She joins a growing list of prospective candidates, as it looks increasingly likely a woman will lead the party in 2020.

Who is Lisa Nandy?

Lisa Nandy is a veteran Labour politician, having represented her Wigan constituency for nearly a decade.

The 40-year-old was born in Manchester in 1979 to Dipak Nandy and Louise Byers.

She began her political career as a researcher and caseworker for Labour MP Neil Gerrard and became a Labour councillor for Hammersmith Broadway from 2006 to 2010.

After serving as a shadow cabinet member for housing, she took up the Labour stronghold Wigan from Neil Turner in 2010.

The MP voted to remain in the EU but has come around to back Brexit, supporting Boris Johnson’s Brexit deal and the country’s choice to leave the bloc.

Speaking to the Andrew Marr Show on Sunday (December 15), she revealed part of the reason why she is considering the leadership role is because she felt the “earth-shattering” defeat in her constituency.

Asked whether she would run, she said Labour needed to bring their voters “home”.

She said: “The honest answer is that I am seriously thinking about it.”

“The reason that I am thinking about it is because we have just had the most shattering defeat where you really felt in towns like mine that the earth was quaking and we have watched the entire Labour base just crumble beneath our feet.

“We need to think seriously now about first of all how you bring those lifelong Labour voters – who felt that they not only couldn’t vote Labour but actually in many instances chose the Tories – how you bring Labour home to them.”

As she announced her interest, Miss Nandy criticised Labour’s chosen manifesto for the 2019 election, claiming some of the promises showed a disconnect with the general public.

Writing in the Guardian on December 15, she said Labour had “lost touch with the day-to-day lived experience of many of the people we want to represent”.

Labour Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell said the process to decide who replaces Jeremy Corbyn as Labour party leader would likely start next week.

He said the party’s National Executive Committee would meet in the coming days to nail down a date for the forthcoming election, and Jeremy Corbyn would stand down in 2020.

Miss Nandy joins a slew of potential frontrunners emerging before official candidates are declared, with it seeming increasingly likely the party will welcome its first female leader.

The current top favourite for the role is Rebecca Long-Bailey, who has served as Shadow Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy since 2017.

Speaking to the Sophy Ridge show earlier today, Shadow Justice Secretary Richard Burgon put his support behind the Salford and Eccles MP.

He told the show she was one of the few candidates which could successfully win back lost voters in the northern Leave voter seats, adding Miss Long-Bailey would be a “fantastic first woman leader of the Labour Party”.

Betmakers Ladbrokes have assigned the MP odds of 7/2 to take the position, just ahead of Shadow Brexit Secretary Sir Kier Starmer, who is on odds of 4/1.

Here is Ladbrokes’ full list of possible candidates next year and their current odds of taking the role:

– Rebecca Long-Bailey: 7/2

– Keir Starmer: 4/1

– Angela Rayner: 6/1

– Lisa Nandy: 6/1

– Yvette Cooper: 10/1

– Emily Thornberry: 20/1

– Clive Lewis: 33/1

– Dan Jarvis: 33/1
