Lionel Richie told his daughter Sofia that he wanted her to experience ‘failure’ when she started out in her career.
The legendary singer, who is also dad to Nicole Richie, 38, and Miles Richie, 25, dished out some tough love to the 21-year-old.
But he wasn’t just being a meanie – he wanted his daughter to learn how tough showbiz can be.
Speaking to press at an event for American Idol, People quotes the All Night Long singer saying: ‘I told her, “I wish you lots of failure, young”. We’re in a business where it’s how you recover and “yes, yes, yes” does not feel terrible, so you have to get smacked in the face.
‘I said, “You’re going to have a little bit more of a different time because you’re coming from a family where they expect a little bit more.’
He also recalled a heartbreaking moment when Sofia auditioned for a talent show at four-years-old.
‘She’s about to go on to do her little act and they said, “And now we have Lionel Richie’s daughter” and she froze. She said, “Dad I don’t want to be here”.
‘I remember that being, what a terrifying moment.’
The model is currently dating reality TV star Scott Disick, 36, the ex of Kourtney Kardashian.
Sofia recently revealed she would not be appearing in the upcoming series of Keeping Up With The Kardashians.
She told Entertainment Tonight she was sitting out in the show, saying: ‘I feel like, for a while, I kind of held back on things because I was afraid of failure, but 2020 is [the year of] no fear! I’m gonna be doing acting stuff really soon.’
