Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo will be succeeded by Man City star in Ballon d'Or race

Messi and Ronaldo have had a strangle-hold on the coveted Ballon d’Or for an entire decade.

Despite Real Madrid’s Luka Modric claiming the award last year, Bernardo could be next in line to leave a long-lasting dynasty on the world-famous prize.

The Man City playmaker had a terrific season, and was voted the club’s Player of the Season by the fans.

Within two or three years, he’ll be the best player in the world, according to former Portugal star Paulo Futre.

“I think Bernardo will be the next star, or he will be when Ronaldo and Messi start to decline,” he told Omnisport.

“I think Bernardo will be one of those who will be ready to win the Ballon d’Or, because he is a player with a lot of responsibility in a great team like Manchester City.

“He will continue to grow and in two or three years, when Messi and Cristiano retire, I think he can be one of the big favourites to win the Ballon d’Or.”

Bernardo played a crucial role in City’s treble-winning season, as well as their 100-point Premier League haul the year before.

He made 51 appearances for the Citizens last season, and proved particularly vital in City’s 2-1 win over Liverpool at the Etihad Stadium in January.

The midfielder – who has been tipped as David Silva’s long-term replacement – scored seven goals in the league last year, and made eight assists.

He’s also become a key part of Portugal’s future, and has already been given 38 international caps, scoring three goals.

At 24-years-old, Bernado could be playing at the top level for up to another 10 years.

Meanwhile, his ‘soon-to-be’ predecessor Messi is in action tonight in the Copa America.

Argentina are facing Venezuela in Rio de Janeiro, with the action getting underway at 8pm BST.

The two sides head into the match in fairly even territory, with two successive draws coming from their latest competitive matches.

But, Venezuela came out 3-1 winners in a friendly match just three months ago.
