Line Of Duty fans are convinced that bent copper Matthew Dot Cotton aka The Caddy never actually died and will be back in the series five finale.

Suspicions were raised after Martin Compston, who plays Steve Arnott, teased the character’s comeback by posting a selfie alongside actor Craig Parkinson with the caption: ‘Looking forward to ep6’ with the shifty eyes emoji.

We all know what the shifty eyes emoji means.

The Caddy was supposedly killed off in series three after being sprayed with bullets fired from a member of the Organised Crime Unit, but viewers now believe that this might have been a cover up and shared their theories.

‘Rumour has is Dot is making a comeback from the dead…or they’re just out for a pint. It’s all too much,’ wrote one, while another added: ‘Omg is he aliveeeeeee?’

Many also went to Reddit to discuss whether The Caddy’s comeback could be on the cards under the thread: ‘Will Dot make a return in the final of season 5?’

‘I’ve just been thinking that DCS Carmichael is so determined to prove Hastings is “H” that she might have a trick up her sleeve,’ said the original poster.

‘She could (assuming Dot is alive and in witness protection) turn Dot against his former boss and identify Ted as being “H.”

‘After-all, Dot was “The Caddy” and was working under orders from Ted to recruit fellow officers. The only way DCS Carmichael can prove that Hastings is “H”’is to have someone like Dot to say he is.

‘Fortunately for Ted, the Blackthorn incident will hold no ground as there is no proof of what was said and sadly he just a mere coincidence that Corbett died shortly after Hastings visit to Lee Banks.’

Some aren’t convinced though, replying: ‘I think its thoroughly debunked that he’s currently alive. He can’t be in witness protection or be granted immunity because of his most serious criminal offenses (murder of Denton) and that they’d probably have more ‘H‘ information if he lived.

‘Plus the OCG wouldnt believe his cover as a UCO or poking around the businesses because he’s supposed to have a died. Perhaps we’ll get a flash back.’

Guess only time will tell.

Line Of Duty continues Sunday at 9pm on BBC One.
