Line of Duty season 5 spoilers: Ted Hastings exits after twist proves he’s NOT guilty?

However, even if Hastings’ (played by Adrian Dunbar) innocence is proven, he might still be losing his job on Line of Duty.

Hastings’ colleagues DI Kate Fleming (Vicky McClure) and DS Steve Arnott (Martin Compston) became suspicious of him and reported him to anti-corruption.

He had been doing a number of unorthodox things, including visiting the imprisoned OCG member Lee Banks (Alastair Natkiel) in prison.

It remains to be seen if Hastings really is H or if he is truly innocent on the BBC series.

But if the truth is revealed in tonight’s episode, he may not be able to keep his job either way.

Former prison governor and Emeritus Professor of Criminology at Birmingham City University, David Wilson, has spoken on the feasibility of Ted keeping his role in AC-12.

He said: “[Jed] Mercurio knows how to write a narrative arc to throw the audience off the scent. He does this by making it appear as if we know more than we actually do.

“However, that caveat notwithstanding, it would appear to me to lead back to Ted Hastings.

“If Hastings is not ‘H’, which is perfectly feasible, he has broken so many rules by this stage of the investigation that he could never be allowed to be in charge again!”

So, could it be goodbye to Hastings even if he isn’t a bent copper? Viewers will have to wait until tonight to find out.

Meanwhile, some fans think ‘H’ could be none other than DCS Patricia Carmichael (Anna Maxwell Martin).

Carmichael was only introduced to the programme in the penultimate episode.

She seems determined to send Hastings down but it could be to cover her own back.

Viewers have employed some lateral thinking to guess that Carmichael may have a nickname that points to her being H.

Several viewers have pointed out on social media that she could be nicknamed “Hoagy” after American singer-songwriter, Hoagy Carmichael.

The first initial of the nickname could of course lend itself to why she would be called H.

“#LineOfDuty How about if DCS Carmichael had a nickname “Hogie” for H ?” one questioned.

While another asked: “I’m sure it’s already been thought of, but Detective Chief Superintendent Patricia “Hoagy” Carmichael? H Carmichael? H…? I’ll get my coat #LineOfDuty.”

“#LineOfDuty Hoagland Howard “Hoagy” Carmichael was a very successful American singer, songwriter, and actor in the 40’s and 50’s. Is the new DCS Patricia Carmichael’s code name “H” and the head of the OCG?” a third observed.

Line of Duty continues tonight at 9pm on BBC One.
