Lidl to open £70m Scottish distribution centre by November

Lidl has confirmed its new distribution centre for Scotland will be fully operational by November.

The supermarket chain gave politicians and councillors a tour of the £70 million warehouse at Eurocentral, near Motherwell. It is Lidl’s biggest in Britain at 58,500 sq ft.

Its 600 staff in roles ranging from operations and logistics to customer service will serve Lidl’s 97 stores – a total rising to 100 by the start of next year.

Neil Gray, MP for Airdrie and Shotts, Graham Simpson, MSP for Central Scotland Region, Des Murray, CEO of North Lanarkshire Council and Jim Logue, leader of North Lanarkshire Council were among those shown the facility by Lidl management including regional director Ross Millar and head of property Gordon Rafferty.

Millar said: “We are incredibly proud of our new warehouse and we’re really pleased to welcome guests to the site to show how work is progressing. As we head into the final phase of construction, the team here at Lidl are all incredibly excited about moving into our new Scottish home.

“Our investment in this new warehouse underlines our long-term commitment to Scotland, which will help to ensure that Lidl stores from Kirkwall to Stranraer are always stocked with our fresh, locally sourced, high quality products.”

Gray, an SNP MP, said: “It’s great to see the construction progress at the distribution centre and meet the team who are delivering the project. It is a very impressive site and will be an incredible facility.

“I’m really pleased Lidl are continuing to invest in the area, bringing new jobs and opportunities to the local community and I look forward working with the Lidl going forward to maximise opportunities for my constituents”.

Lidl opened its first store in Scotland in 1994 and now employs more than 2,200 people there, stocking more than over 300 products from 60 suppliers across the country.
