Liberal Democrat deputy leader Jo Swinson urges other anti-Brexit voters to join party

And she held out the possibility of working with Change UK as well as the Greens as the Lib Dems stepped up their bid to stop Brexit.

The party stormed to second in the Euro Elections with 20.3 per cent of the vote – trouncing Labour.

Tory veteran Michael Heseltine and Labour attack dog Alistair Campbell both admitted to voting Lib Dems because of their clear anti-Brexit stance.

And the success comes just weeks after the Lib Dems gained hundreds of seats and won back key councils in the local elections.

Ms Swinson – who is fighting to succeed Vince Cable as leader- said: “We have been really bringing people together.

“We will continue working with people in all different parties who want to secure a people’s vote and to protect our place in the EU, that includes people in Change UK and the Greens.”

Vince Cable last week confirmed plans to step down and hand over the leadership to his successor on July 23.

Ms Swinson is expected to set out her leadership plans this week. Her main rival is expected to be ex-Coalition Minister Sir Ed Davey.
