Why has LP1 caused controversy?

Liam has been called out by some fans for fetishising bisexual women in the song Both Ways, which appeared on his debut album LP1.

The song includes the lyrics: “My girl, she like it both ways. She like the way it all taste / Couple more, we’ll call it foreplay / No, no, I don’t discriminate.”

It’s followed by the chorus: “Flipping that body, go head, I go tails / Sharing that body like it’s our last meal / One and a two and a three, that’s for real.”

Twitter user @alysscorpio wrote: “as a bisexual woman, it was extremely uncomfortable reading the lyrics to ‘both ways’ by liam payne.

“he openly fetishizes the fact that a woman likes boys and girls, and he even mentions bi women in threesomes which furthers the stereotype that all bi ppl are only into that.”

She continued: “i have no words. i genuinely expected better from someone like liam payne, but the fact that he is adding to the constant stereotypes and the fetishism towards bi women is completely unacceptable. i am very disappointed.”

The fan then continued: “the fact that he also called this his favorite song off the album further displays that he sees nothing wrong with the song, which is not okay…

i always try to look on the bright side of things, so i hope @liampayne realizes why these lyrics are not okay. i hope he responds to all of us and understands why we are upset.

What has Liam Payne said about his song Both Ways?

Before the album was released, Liam spoke about the song in a BBC interview.

He announced that Both Ways was his favourite song on the album and explained that the lyrics are about being open-minded in the “world of ‘love is love'”.

Liam said: “People [are] becoming much more understanding about the way love is. And rightly so.”

He also insisted the song is not based on his own experiences, adding: “I don’t know who in the studio had actually been in this situation, because I certainly haven’t, but it was an interesting song to write.”
