Liam Payne has discussed the bizarre levels of fame he experienced as a member of One Direction – including the night a police officer asked for an autograph after his flat went up in flames.

A blaze broke out at his home – in a luxury block of flats in London’s Canary Wharf – during a party back in 2013, leaving three people injured.

And, recalling the infamous night, the Strip That Down singer Liam explained that the officer in charge of the case asked for his autograph.

The dad-of-one explained: ‘When I was 18 or 19, a fire broke out at my flat. My friend was burnt and had fainted, and I had to put him in an ambulance. I didn’t know if he would live or die.

‘My girlfriend was in another ambulance and I was in a police car.

‘I was looking at my home, thinking that I had lost everything, when the policeman turned around and point-blank asked me for an autograph.

‘I didn’t know how to react, to be honest, so I just signed something to get rid of the problem,’ he added to the Times.

‘But it was quite crazy.’

Liam is now gearing up for the release of his debut solo album LP1, out 6 December 2019.

The 26-year-old star has already scored two top 10 UK hit singles since the demise of One Direction: 2017’s Strip That Down, and last year’s duet with Rita Ora, For You.
