Letitia Wright: It will be ‘strange’ to make a Black Panther sequel without Chadwick Boseman

Letitia Wright has admitted it will be “strange” to make a Black Panther sequel without co-star Chadwick Boseman as she spoke of her grief at his death.

The London-born actress, 26, had her big Hollywood break in the Marvel superhero movie alongside Boseman, who died of colon cancer in August aged 43. The actor had not talked about his cancer battle in public.

She told PORTER: “We’re just still mourning Chad, so it’s not something I even want to think about. The thought of doing it without him is kinda strange. We’re just grieving at the moment, so it’s trying to find the light in the midst of it.”

Before Boseman passed away, Black Panther 2 was widely reported to be in the works. It is not yet known what Marvel or Disney, its owners, are planning following Boseman’s death.

Wright also spoke of how “special” it was to star in Steve McQueen’s Mangrove, which opened this year’s London Film Festival opening movie. The film is about the notorious prosecution of the Mangrove Nine in 1970 which exposed police brutality against black Londoners.

“I immediately got it, y’know? Hearing the lingo that you’re so used to hearing in your own household, how we dress, how we interact… That was beautiful to see.

“I’m so used to seeing other people’s cultures. Now it’s their turn to be educated.”

The star said McQueen gave her some advice for her career. “He said, ‘Tish, man, you’re an artist! This stuff that you’re doing now, that’s it. Don’t get lost in Hollywood!’”

She said integrity with her work was important to her – adding working within her principles was something her father had “instilled” in her.

Wright said: “It’s something that my father instilled in me… I’ve given up millions for my integrity.”
