Lena Dunham has opened up about how difficult it can be to date when you’re sober, despite loving spending time in England.

The Girls creator, 33, told The Jonathan Ross Show how challenging she was finding it to meet men now that she doesn’t drink.

She explained: ‘Here’s the thing that I’m finding about dating here. I love being in England, love the culture, love the people.

‘I’m sober, it’s a choice, and I would say sober dating in the UK is a roughie.

‘It was easy to find guys when I would drink because I would drink a lot, go over to their house, throw up and then they would have to let me stay.

‘But in Wales when I was being a polite woman of dignity and grace, much more challenging.

‘If anyone in the audience knows of a nice, sober, respectable but a little bit freaky man who would like to take me to dinner, I’m open.’

Lena split with musician Jack Antonoff last year after spending six years together, and she admits that being in Wales for filming helped her deal with the heartbreak.

She revealed: ‘It was so cosy. There were sheep all around us. I’m from New York City… Suddenly I’m in Wales sitting in a turret in a little castle like I’m freaking Charlotte Bronte.

‘The whole thing was so romantic. I was recovering from a broken heart. That’s where you go… I was healing.’

Lena had previously revealed how much the break-up had affected her, writing in Vogue in 2018: ‘We sat in our shared kitchen of nearly four years and quietly faced each other, acknowledging what nobody wanted to say.

‘That obsessive connection had turned to blind devotion, and the blinders were coming off to reveal that we had evolved separately (the least shocking reason of all and perhaps the most common)/

‘That anger wasn’t sexy or sustainable. That our hearts were still broken from trying so hard to fix it but no longer uncertain about whether or not we could. The finality nearly killed me.

‘Our home, a sprawling loft bought when we brimmed with shared plans for each room, was no longer a space of comfort.’

The Jonathan Ross Show is on ITV at 10.25pm on Saturday 7 December.
