Lena Dunham has revealed she ‘didn’t want to live’ after becoming addicted to prescription drug in the aftermath of her split from Jack Antonoff and her hysterectomy.

In late 2017, the Girls star underwent a full hysterectomy after suffering years of excruciating pain from endometriosis.

At the same time, Lena split from her boyfriend of nearly six years, Bleachers star Jack.

And the 33-year-old has explained how becoming hooked on benzodiazepines left her feeling ‘nothing’.

Speaking to Cosmopolitan UK, the actress said: ‘It got really complicated. I realised I wasn’t just taking medication for physical pain, I was taking medication for the emotional pain too.

And then suddenly, especially this stuff, the benzos [benzodiazepines, a common type of anxiety medication], it changes your brain chemistry and suddenly you’re not yourself. You’re not present. You’re not functional.

‘One day, I looked around and I was lying in a bed in my parents’ apartment under two blankets, in the same pyjamas I’d been in for three days, and I was like, “This isn’t me.” It wasn’t that I was suicidal. I felt nothing. I didn’t want to live.’

Now, Lena is sober, and has also taken a break from dating.

She explained: ‘Sobriety for me means so much more than just not doing drugs, it also means that I abstain from negative relationships.

‘It means I’ve taken a hiatus from dating, which has been amazing for me.’

Lena previously admitted that she found sober dating difficult when living in Wales, where she was filming her upcoming series Industry.

That being said, she can find plenty of tips on Love Island, having become obsessed with the series last summer.

Lena’s full interview is available in the March issue of Cosmopolitan, out on 30 January.
