Leipzig brutally mock Tottenham over Dayot Upamecano transfer move

Leipzig’s official Twitter account hasn’t taken too kindly to suggestions that Dayot Upamecano could be set for a big-money move to Tottenham in the summer transfer window.

Upamecano has established himself as one of the finest central defenders in the Bundesliga since joining Leizpig back in 2017 and Spurs are in a fierce battle with Arsenal and Barcelona for the 21-year-old’s signature.

Reports in Germany claim Upamecano is intent on leaving Leipzig ahead of the 2020/21 campaign and the German outfit are preparing to listen to offers from interested parties over the coming weeks and months.

They stand to make a hefty profit on the £9million they paid for the centre-half back in 2017.

However, it appears the admin of Leipzig’s Twitter page hasn’t quite accepted that Upamecano’s days at the club could be numbered and lashed out at a cheeky Tottenham fan talking up a move for the Frenchman on Friday.

Leipzig shared a picture of a young Upamecano and prompted their followers to guess which player featured in the photograph, asking supporters: ‘Who’s that?’

Tottenham fan @Richie469 responded, ‘A future spurs player’, to which Leipzig replied: ‘Spurs and a future…? This doesn’t add up…’

Unsurprisingly, the dig at Spurs went down very well with Arsenal supporters who stormed the tweet with their own replies.

The Twitter exchange comes a month after Leipzig booked their place in the Champions League quarter-finals with a comprehensive 4-0 aggregate victory over Tottenham.

Upamecano missed the first leg of the last-16 tie through suspension but played the full 90 minutes at Leipzig’s Red Bull Arena as goals from Marcel Sabitzer (2) and Emil Forsberg confirmed Spurs’ elimination.

The sought-after defender insists he’s fully focussed on Leipzig for the time being but will sit down and discuss his future at the end of the season.

‘I feel very good at RB Leipzig. I like my team-mates, the staff and my club,’ Upamecano told Foot Mercato last month.

‘For the moment, I am still under contract until 2021. I am going to have to continue to train well and play matches.

‘Even though I know that there are clubs that want me, that is certain, I am keeping my feet on the ground.’

‘We will discuss my future at the end of the season with my agents and my family.’
