Leicester deny Burton another fairy tale as Everton and Oxford advance

Leicester deny Burton another dream run

There will be no repeat of Burton Albion’s fairytale run to the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup this season after Leicester City eventually proved too strong at the Pirelli Stadium.

The League One side claimed famous victories against Aston Villa, Burnley, Nottingham Forest and Middlesbrough en route to the last four of the competition during the 2018/19 campaign, but there was to be no more giant-killing on Tuesday night.

Burton, who added Bournemouth to their growing list of scalps in the previous round, did pull a goal back through Liam Boyce early in the second half after strikes from Kelechi Iheanacho and Youri Tielemans had given Leicester a two-goal cushion at half-time.

Brendan Rodgers’ team were put under some intense pressure in the second half but survived several difficult spells and sealed a place in the quarter-finals for the third year in a row when substitute James Maddison struck in the final minute.

Holgate saves Everton’s blushes

Marco Silva was saved from further strife as Everton advanced into the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup courtesy of second-half goals from Mason Holgate and Richarlison at Goodison Park.

Holgate headed home what was his first goal for the Toffees in the 72nd minute, after a poor offering from both out-of-form sides, before ex-Hornets striker Richarlison drew an end to a nervy finale after thrashing past Heurelho Gomes in stoppage time.

Colchester edge Crawley in League Two knockout

Colchester United defeated League Two rivals Crawley Town to reach the quarter-finals of the League Cup for just the second time in the club’s history.

Dannie Bulman gave the hosts the lead with a brilliant 25-yard strike before Colchester levelled when Luke Norris turned home Frank Nouble’s cross.

Cohen Bramall’s long-range free-kick then deflected in off the goalkeeper’s back after striking the crossbar, before Luke Gambin sealed victory and a first quarter-final spot since the 1975/75 season with little over 10 minutes remaining.

Oxford hold nerve in penalty shootout

Oxford United defeated Sunderland on penalties to reach their first League Cup quarter-final since 1887/88.

United had taken the lead through Rob Hall’s curling first-half effort, but the lead was cancelled out by Marc McNulty’s close-range strike late in the second-half.

However, Oxford hero Simon Eastwood then denied McNulty and Will Grigg to clinch victory in the shootout.
