Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers will provide James Maddison with every opportunity to prove his fitness ahead of Monday’s Premier League clash against Newcastle United.

The England international, who scored his side’s winning goal in last weekend’s comeback win over Tottenham, suffered an ankle injury and remains a doubt for the visit of Steve Bruce’s struggling side.

Maddison, along with a number of senior first team players, missed Tuesday night’s convincing 4-0 win over Luton Town in the Carabao Cup, but could still be fit enough to feature on Monday.

Rodgers said: ‘We’ll see over the next couple of days he’s a doubt, he’s putting some weight on his ankle.

‘We’ll give him every chance.’

Leicester are currently third in the table after beating Spurs, bouncing back from their only defeat of the season so far against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Rodgers said: ‘It was a very important win, when you play against the top sides, you want to do well.

‘Tottenahm have top quality players, a real test for us, especially going behind. The connection between supporters and players was very strong. It helps build confidence.’

While Rodgers’ reputation continues to soar, his opposite number on Monday, Steve Bruce, is facing a backlash from Newcastle fans who booed their team off following last weekend’s 0-0 draw at home to Brighton.

‘Steve’s an excellent manager, very experienced,’ added Rodgers. ‘The more experience, the better you become.

‘He’s from the area, he knows the feelings of the people. There won’t be anybody working harder to make it right there.’
