Guitarist Brian May, right with the coin, said: “This is a big ‘who could have imagined it?’ moment for us.”

Earlier this month, we found that a rare coin featuring the Queen’s uncle before he abdicated had been bought for a record-breaking £1million.

The Edward VIII coin is made from 22-carat gold and is one of six that were minted back in 1935 as a trial when the Royal took the throne.

But the coins were never released to the public because he gave up the position of Monarch in 1936 to marry American divorcee Wallis Simpson.

It was snapped up by a private buyer in the UK after the Royal Mint located it with a collector in the US.

Rebecca Morgan, head of collector services at the Mint, said: “We were delighted to be able to locate such a special coin for our customer, and bring it back to the UK to make history once more.”

The coin is believed to be one of just two that are privately owned
