Legend of Zelda Link's Awakening surprise update and Zelda Breath of the Wild 2 news

With more action on the way via The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild 2, Nintendo Switch gamers are being spoilt for choice.

This month has seen the launch of Zelda Link’s Awakening, a big remake of the original which helped put TLOZ on the map.

One of the more surprising features included in the game for Switch is the addition of the Chamber Dungeon.

Dungeons that can be created at Dampe’s Shack is a neat idea that came about due to some of Nintendo’s other popular projects.

Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma revealed as much while talking to IGN and discussing the big launch for Nintendo Switch.

It reveals why Chamber Dungeons play the way they do and why accessibility became the key to the whole project.

“I talk to Mr. Miyamoto regularly about ‘the next Zelda game,’ and one time, he asked me if I could come up with a game that features Super Mario Maker-like gameplay, but for Zelda,” Aonuma revealed to IGN.

“We talked about how a game like this for Zelda would have dungeons, but it’s generally quite difficult to devise the logic needed to solve them.”

“So we gave some thought into a more approachable style of play where you have to think about how to arrange parts that already have a solution to create a single dungeon, instead of allowing players to create complex arrangements like in Super Mario Maker 2, and that’s how we created the Chamber Dungeons for this game.”

Interestingly, one feature that was never in the offing for Link’s Awakening was bringing an open-world concept to the remake.

Providing such gameplay in Breath of the Wild proved a massive hit but was never seen as something that would work for Link’s Awakening.

Aonuma revealed as much to the Hollywood Reporter, revealing that forcing such a concept would never work for the classic Zelda adventure.

“Open world games are designed to suit an open world, and we felt forcing a game that wasn’t designed that way into the open-world model wouldn’t make it fun or interesting,” he explained.

“Top-down adventure games also have their own unique appeal, so that’s what we focused on this time.”

It follows exciting news regarding the future of the next big Legend of Zelda game – Breath of the Wild 2.

This remains one of Nintendo’s next major undertakings, with fans hoping for a quicker turnaround than with the first game.

As already confirmed, Breath of the Wild 2 will retain its open-world concepts while delivering a new storyline to explore.

And the Breath of the Wild 2 dev team has said that they’re on the lookout for new ‘terrain designers’.

Satoshi Takizawa, the art director for Breath of the Wild 2, said: “We want to borrow the power of more people to deliver new experiences that exceed the previous work”.

There have already been hints that Dungeons will be returning as a firm feature in the BOTW sequel.

So could we see more Chamber Dungeon gameplay, revamped for an open-world experience?

Fans will be keeping an eye out for all the latest Nintendo Switch news connected with the big project.
