Legally Blonde 3’s release date has been confirmed for 8 May, following rumours it was set to drop on Valentine’s Day.

The hit film’s third instalment will see Reese Witherspoon reprise her iconic role of Elle Woods.

Universal confirmed the latest addition to the Legally Blonde franchise will arrive on 8 May 2020 after having its original release date pushed back.

Reese officially announced that Legally Blonde 3 would be happening on Instagram in June 2018, posting a video of her floating on a lilo in a pink bikini and telling fans: ‘It’s true… #LegallyBlonde3.’

She has since teased that more of the original cast may be returning for the third movie, but it’s yet to be confirmed who that will include.

Legally Blonde 3, which is also going to be produced by Reese, is actually the fourth movie in the franchise, with the third being spin-off Legally Blondes.

As well as spawning a series of spin-off movies, Legally Blonde also became a musical in 2007, with runs on Broadway and the West End.

Reese told Entertainment Tonight of the third movie: ‘Oh, it’s gonna be so fun! I got to go to a meeting the other day where we talked about all the new plot points and all the characters and some returning characters and some new characters.

‘I mean, I got so excited just in the meeting. I was like, “This is gonna be good.”’

Legally Blonde 3 comes 19 years after the original dropped in 2001, but there are no details as yet on where Elle’s life has taken her.

Many of the cast have previously said they’re up for coming back for the next instalment, including Luke Wilson, who played Elle’s beau Emmett Richmind.

He told ET: ‘[I would] definitely be up for it. I can’t imagine anything that would be more fun.’

Jennifer Coolidge, who played Paulette Bonafonte, and Ali Larter, who played Brooke Taylor-Windham, also said they would love to be on board.

Legally Blonde 3 will be released on 8 May 2020.
