Left 4 Dead VR is Valve’s next game after Half-Life: Alyx claim insiders

Valve’s second of three promised VR games is supposedly a new Left 4 Dead game, so does that mean the third is Portal?

Steam operators Valve have already said they have three major ‘flagship’ VR games in development and we now know that one of them is Half-Life: Alyx. But according to the latest rumours Left 4 Dead VR is the second.

It is an obvious guess, but the Valve News Network already correctly predicted that the new Half-Life game would be a VR prequel.

As with Half-Life: Alyx, the Left 4 Dead prediction was originally made a few weeks ago and was based on datamining of code found in the updates of new Valve games.

It’s not proof though, so whether they now have more concrete evidence is unclear, but as you can see from the tweet above they’re promising more videos soon.

Left 4 Dead was first released in 2008, with a sequel a year later, and pioneered the idea of a four-player co-op first person shooter with a hint of survival horror.

Despite no new sequel in over a decade, the concept has been copied by numerous other developers, from Warhammer: Vermintide to World War Z.

Their claim that Half-Life: Alyx will be at The Game Awards on Friday has already been confirmed, although there doesn’t seem to be any suggestion that Left 4 Dead VR will be there as well.

Presumably someone from Valve will be on stage to introduce the game though, so there’s a good chance we’ll at least get a hint at the second and third games.

At this point, you’d have to assume there’s also a good chance the third VR title will be something to do with another famous Valve franchises, such as Portal, Team Fortress, Counter-Strike, or Dota.

Ordinarily that’d be reason to celebrate but as much as fans have longed for a new Half-Life or Left 4 Dead the fact that you need a VR headset is going mean the majority of people never get a chance to play the new games.

They’re also not Half-Life 3 or Left 4 Dead 3, which is what everyone’s been hoping for all this time. You could even argue that the fact the new games are VR titles makes it less likely we’ll ever see regular sequels.
