Learn how to use baking soda for cutting household costs with useful saving tips

BAKING soda can usually be found tucked away at the back of a cupboard somewhere. But it’s not just for baking. I’ve been using mine to clean up the house this week.

There are lots of other money-saving ways to use it, too — so check out these handy baking soda hacks.

JEWELLERY: To spruce up your silver jewellery, you will need a bowl, tin foil, boiling water and baking soda.

Bring the water to a boil while lining the bowl with tin foil.

Place the jewellery in the bowl, making sure it is touching the foil.

Then add some boiling water to cover the jewellery and one tablespoon of baking soda for every cup of water.

Sit back and watch the magic happen.

SHIRTS: Are your white shirts looking a bit dull?

Add some baking soda to your laundry detergent.

It is cheaper than a tub of Vanish.

MATTRESSES: Sprinkle baking soda over your mattress, rub it in, leave for an hour, then hoover up.

You can mix a couple of drops of essential oil with the baking soda first to give a lovely scent.

WALLS: Has a certain little artist been making a canvas of your walls?

To get crayon off, mix water and baking soda to make a paste, then use a cloth to scrub the walls with it. Job done.

CARPETS: Sprinkle some baking soda over your carpet and leave for around half an hour before hoovering up.

This will remove any smelly odours and leave it clean and smelling fresh.

HAIR: No dry shampoo?

Dust your hair brush with some baking soda then run it through your hair.

Or, sprinkle directly on to your roots and work in as normal.

TEETH: For teeth whitening, mix a small amount of baking soda and water on your toothbrush and brush for a few minutes.

SHOWERS: Mix three tablespoons of baking soda with a drop of water to make a paste.

Use to sponge down shower doors.

Wipe away with water.

You will finally be able to see through those doors once again.
