Law firm appoints fourth partner in its Edinburgh office

Law firm Burges Salmon has appointed a fourth partner to the Edinburgh office established this year.

Stuart McMillan joins the firm’s banking team from DLA Piper , where he had been a partner having left Shepherd and Wedderburn in 2006.

At DLA Piper he was the Edinburgh head for the finance and projects team. He is a nationally recognised authority on energy and infrastructure finance, and advises a wide range of banks and borrowers on project finance, acquisition finance and real estate finance deals.

The University of Edinburgh graduate is qualified in both Scotland and in England and Wales, and frequently advises on deals involving cross-border financing.

McMillan said: “Everyone in the market was aware of the successful launch of Burges Salmon’s Edinburgh office in May. Not only does the firm’s banking team manage complex financing transactions, and advise a diverse range of clients on all aspects of banking law, but it is also very well known for having some of the best lawyers in the country in the infrastructure, real estate and energy sectors.

“I’m therefore really pleased to be joining Burges Salmon at such an exciting time in its growth and helping the firm enhance its presence across these strategically significant sectors.”

McMillan will also strength Burges Salmon’s infrastructure, real estate and energy expertise and capability, working alongside existing Edinburgh partners Danny Lee, Robert Forman and Craig Whelton and the firm-wide teams. Stuart will spend the majority of his time in the firm’s Edinburgh office, which opened in April, and will also work with its wider practices, sector groups and existing Scottish practice, to develop and grow existing and new client relationships.

Managing partner Roger Bull said: “We’re really excited to be able to announce Stuart’s arrival, which will further help us best meet the needs of our clients in Scotland and our commitment to the continued growth of both the firm and our long-standing successful Scottish practice.”
