Lauryn Hill appeared to suffer technical issues during her Glastonbury performance on Friday night, leaving some fans very disappointed and others slamming her for ‘berating the sound technician’ publicly.
The legendary singer took to the Pyramid stage at Worthy Farm to a cheering crowd and for her performance, she wore a black cowboy-style hat complete with a pearl chain strap and asked fans if they were ‘ready to take it back’.
She then launched into a melody of her hit songs however during renditions of her classic hits Ex Factor, Zion, and Lost Ones, the Grammy winner appeared to be gesturing to the sound engineers off stage.
It appeared the 44-year-old – who was about 15 minutes late to her set – was unhappy with something, with one fan joking on Twitter: ‘Lauryn Hill just literally clapped at the sound engineers like they were animals’.
A social media user chipped in adding: ‘Lauryn Hill is singing while also berating the sound technicians. Love a multi-tasking always late to her own concert tax-evading queen.’
‘Can somebody please buy Lauryn Hill a set of ear pieces that fit,’ shared an observant fan.
Meanwhile, one music-lover had an opposing opinion as they posted: ‘No, it’s not the earphones that’s the problem Lauryn….’
Another user tweeted: ‘I admire Miss Lauryn Hill immensely. She seems to be struggling with a runny nose.’
Meanwhile, an unhappy individual was not as forgiving and shared: ‘Lauryn Hill needs to stop being a diva, quit yelling at people and barking instructions off stage and just get on with singing.
‘It’s not your gig love so just accept the festival for what it is. If you’re not happy, take the headphones out!’
However, the audience did not seem so fussed with the technical issues as they sang her songs word for word and even launched into an acapella for Killing Me Softly.
She told the crowd: ‘You are hired. Thank you so much. God Bless you guys. Have a wonderful festival. Be great. Be Kind. One Love’
The mother-of-six, who shares five children Rohan Marley, made her name in 90s hip-hop band The Fugees before breaking off as a solo artist with her critically acclaimed 1998 debut album The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill.
The singer has not released a studio since then but became the first woman to win five or more Grammy awards in a single night in 1998 and is still regarded as a pioneer for women in music, as both a rapper and singer.
