Laura Hamilton still struggles with comments after being body-shamed as a teen

A Place In The Sun presenter Laura Hamilton has revealed that she was body-shamed as a 16-year-old – and admits the comments still affect her.

The presenter, 38, bravely told how she was ridiculed for her legs as a teen and says she can’t “unhear” the comments.

She says that she still finds it “hard” whenever she receives negative comments on social media regarding her appearance.

And while Laura admits that she has grown to realise personal happiness is more important than the opinion of others, she says body-shaming can still hurt.

Speaking to The Sun, she said that she had muscular legs as a result of ballet as a teen, while her friends were more slender in appearance.

She admitted her muscular legs felt “out of proportion” and said: “I’ve never been stick-thin. I’ve always had curves and cellulite.”

However, a comment made towards her at 16 years old questioning her decision to wear a mini skirt because of her legs is something that she says will always stick with her.

She says it’s now caused her legs to be a sore point when it comes to comments.

“I still remember that comment clear as day,” she said. “That was definitely a trigger that made my legs one of my body hang-ups.”

And Laura admitted that it was disappointing when Dancing On Ice judge Jason Gardiner highlighted her own thoughts on national telly in 2011.

She said it “hurt” when he pointed out “that I have tree-trunk legs”.

Laura also said that toning up on the show still didn’t help her with body confidence.

The mum-of-two now says that her diagnosis of rare autoimmune disease immune thrombocytopenic purpura, which leaves her with excessive bruising, was a turning point.

She said: “I thought, ‘Why on earth am I bothered by something so minor as cellulite?'”

And she says that while people say she’s too young for cellulite, all that matters is her happiness and pointed out that her kids sweetly say they want ‘strong legs’ like her.
