YouTube and social media star Emily Hartridge, who died on 12 July in a tragic e-scooter accident, ‘knew the risks’ of riding on the road, claims her boyfriend Jacob Hazell.

Emily is thought to have died after riding the electric scooter in the cycling lane and hitting a bump in the road, which threw her into the path of a lorry.

The 35-year-old was riding the Xiaomi scooter, a battery-powered device which had a top speed of 18mph, after Jake had bought her the gift for her birthday.

‘I initially bought her a standard scooter for her birthday but it was on her wish-list to have an electric one, so I got it for her,’ he said.

‘She was so excited about it and loved using it. But she was always safe, wore a helmet and was conscientious on the roads.

‘We didn’t know they couldn’t be used on the roads, as police would go past all the time and not stop her.’

He added however that Emily’s family do not blame him for her death, and that they are now calling on drivers to be more aware of others on the road.

Emily was a personal trainer and had hosted the Channel 4 show S**t I’m 30 as well as her own YouTube channel which had over 300,000 subscribers, and various online shows.

The happy couple had been planning their future, with Emily being open with her fans about their fertility hopes.

She previously opened up about the decision to freeze her eggs, as she ‘refused to miss her chance at motherhood’.

In an Instagram post shared with her 44.9k followers three days before her death, she opened up about wanting to get pregnant with her personal trainer beau.

She said: ‘I am currently injecting myself twice a day in the hopes of freezing some embryos with @jacob_hazell but my 2nd scan didn’t go well and 1 follicle is growing too quickly so it’s all a bit TBC right now.

‘I will find out more today so can everyone keeps their fingers crossed for me that things have changed.’

Speaking to The Sun, Jake also revealed that the morning of her death she was on her way to the fertility clinic for a follow-up appointment in their bid to have a baby.

‘I called her a bit later that morning to find out how the check-up went but I got no response to WhatsApp or calls, which was unlike her,’ he said.

‘When I called the clinic and they said she’d not turned up to her appointment, I started to panic. I called her family, we called A&E departments and the police but no one had heard from her.’

On his way home he passed the accident site and admitted that he had a ‘sinking feeling’ Emily was involved, before speaking to a police officer who asked him to wait.

‘They started walking towards me and time just seemed to stop. I kind of knew. Then they said, “It’s not good news. I’m just going to say it. I’m afraid she’s dead.”‘

Emily died in Battersea on Friday 12 July.

A statement from her family was shared on her Instagram page confirming the sad news.

‘Hi everyone. This is a horrible thing to have to say over Instagram but we know many of you were expecting to see Emily today and this is the only way to contact you all at once,’ it read.

‘Emily was involved in an accident yesterday and passed away. We all loved her to bits and she will never be forgotten.

‘She has touched so many lives it’s hard to imagine things without her. She was a very special person xxx.’
