Lara Croft: Inferno comic book writer Jackson Lanzing has said he ‘tried so hard’ to make the character’s gayness ‘canon’.

Fans have often believed the iconic Tomb Raider heroine – portrayed on-screen by Angelina Jolie and later Alicia Vikander – to be gay or bisexual.

However, Lara’s sexuality has only ever been hinted at in the stories, which originated with the video game series in 1996.

On Twitter, Jackson replied to a follower who mused: ‘I was replaying the first of the new Tomb Raider trilogy (love that series) and you cannot convince me that Lara and Sam [Nishimura, Lara’s best friend] aren’t 10000% gay for each other. It’s not even subtext.’

To this, Jackson wrote earlier this week: ‘Gail, we tried so hard to make it canon. We had an entire issue in TR: INFERNO dedicated to Lara going through a toxic drug trip and finally, fully understanding her feelings for Sam.

‘By the time it went to publishing, their culminating kiss had become a friendly hug.’

The writer did not clarify why the plot around Lara’s sexality changed.

Artist Phillip Sevy added: ‘I still have the original pencils/inks for that page before I had to redraw it.’

Jackson co-wrote the comics with Collin Kelly for Dark Horse Books.

Fans reacted to the news with a mixture of glee at the revelation and disappointment that it hasn’t come to fruition yet.

‘lara croft is lesbian im going to sleep happy [sic]’ said one fan at the news.

One chimed in: ‘Guys Lara Croft is a lesbian !! This is the best news I’ve ever had. I luv my bb Lara [sic].’

Last year, it was confirmed a sequel was in the works to the 2018 movie Tomb Raider.

The film’s official Twitter account revealed the news, sharing: ‘We’re thrilled to confirm recent news that a new Tomb Raider film starring Alicia Vikander directed by Ben Wheatley is on the way!

‘Stay tuned for more news in the future.’

Perhaps Alicia and Ben will portray the character as gay this time around? Batwoman has paved the way, after all!
