Lana Condor has addressed the controversy surrounding her role in X-Men Apocalypse.

Lana Condor filmed more scenes for X-Men: Apocalypse than we got to see.

The 2016 superhero film sparked criticism from fans who felt the Asian characters, including Jubilee, were not given a lot of dialogue.

Addressing the controversy, Lana admitted that at the time she was ‘happy for any part I could get.’

However she added that looking back, she can see where people’s issues might have come from.

‘Now, if that same experience happened, I would be pretty discouraged and upset and feel there was an injustice,’ she said.

In the interview with Stylecaster, the To All The Boys star recalled being typecast after playing Jubilee.

One particularly cringe audition asked her to behave more like the fictional character Hello Kitty.

‘A lot of times people assume I have an accent, and I don’t,’ she said.

‘I was like, “Hmm. What? You mean the cat with no mouth because when they developed Hello Kitty, they didn’t want women to speak?”

‘They wanted me to be so cutesy because that’s what they think Asians are.’

Speaking about her new romantic film To All The Boys: P.S. I Still Love You, the Netflix star said she is happy she can give Asian girls their ‘Cinderella moment’.

‘There’s a scene where Lara Jean is in this beautiful, almost Cinderella gown and she walks down the stairs to Johnny Ambrose,’ she said.

‘I was waiting on top of the stairs right before we started rolling and it hit me all at once how special that moment was because we don’t get Cinderella moments a lot.

‘As a young girl, I never got to see a Cinderella moment where the girl looked like me.

‘This is the most important part of the story for me is being able to represent our community,’ she continued to Entertainment Weekly.

‘It’s creating a space for Asian Americans to tell their story and have a moment.’
