Lady Gaga pops the question to herself for Valentine’s Day after two previous engagements ended

Lady Gaga has proposed to herself for Valentine’s Day in what she describes as an ‘act of defiance’.

The pop star is encouraging people to take the next step in their relationships whenever they want, not just on the most romantic day of the year.

She has teamed up with shopping service Klarna and activist B. Åkerlund for the campaign Get What You Love, which aims to encourage people to propose whenever they like and not follow the ‘traditional’ idea of women proposing to men on a leap year.

Gaga said: ‘For my entire career, I’ve taken pride in using my voice to stand up for what I believe is right, so I am excited to work with my friend B. and Klarna to celebrate how far we’ve come as a culture, and call out the work we need to continue to do.

‘The idea that a woman can only propose to a man one day every four years is so completely ridiculous!

‘Anyone who knows me knows that I believe any person of any gender identity should be able to express any act of love to anyone else on any day of any year.

‘So in an act of defiance of this outdated tradition, I decided to say yes to MYSELF! And wear this ring today with pride to remind myself and everyone that the only permission you need to love comes from within you.’

The pop star has been engaged twice previously – first to actor Taylor Kinney, who she dated for five years before their split in 2017. She was then engaged to Christian Carino, however they ended things in 2019.

Just this month she went Instagram official with boyfriend Michael Polansky.

The Bad Romance singer chose a typically unique ring to propose with, the glittering ‘Knight Finger’ ring, and the proceeds of the sale of the ring – and others – will go to Dress for Success which helps women achieve economic independence.

Lady Gaga shared a campaign image of herself on social media. Sporting long pink hair, she wears a bright green dress and poses at a white piano, displaying her chosen ring. Fittingly, a sign saying ‘BOSS LADY’ rests on the piano behind her.
