Labrinth worried he would be cut from Kanye West’s gospel album Jesus Is King

Labrinth changed the course of club hits when he first came out with Pass Out nine years ago, and the nation grew to love the singer/producer for his creativity almost immediately.

Creating hits like Pass Out and Frisky with hometown rappers like Tinie Tempah created a slow-growing appreciation for UK artists in a country obsessing over everything American.

And now Labrinth, real name Timothy McKenzie, is back with his brand new album Imagination & The Misfit Kid seven years after his debut record.

However, the musician hasn’t only been working on a somewhat digital soul record, the producer has also been hard at work producing for the likes of Kanye West, Beyoncé, and even HBO hit show Euphoria.

All major successes, Labrinth clearly knows how to pick them out.

The star co-wrote and co-produced God Is of Kanye’s latest album Jesus Is King and confessed he didn’t think he’d ‘make the album’.

Speaking exclusively to Metro.co.uk, he said: ‘My team played some of my music to Kanye and he liked what he heard. He asked me to come and share some music.

‘We ended up just writing together, creating songs.

‘But Kanye likes to write a lot of records, I didn’t think I was going to make the album so to make the record is a big thing.’

To Labrinth, it wasn’t about creating a religious album, it was about the positivity created from it.

The Earthquake star continued: ‘He wanted to make something positive, it wasn’t necessarily about it being religious.

‘For me, I just liked that we were involved in a moment where he wanted to share something positive with the world and say something that will help someone come out of their dark space.

‘Sia helped me come out of my dark space, but with Kanye it felt like I know he’s had a lot of crazy moments with the media and a lot of crazy moments musically, so to be part of a moment where he wanted to bring light and happiness and love and joy to the world was amazing.’

Despite the hugely anticipated album having major delays before it finally got released, Labrinth admits God Is only took a day or so to produce.

‘It was fairly quick,’ Labrinth said. ‘I play a lot of instruments so it’s like I black out and then wake up out of my hypnotized crazy moment and I’m like “Oh!”’

Meanwhile, the All For Us artist played his first gig in a while for Deezer as part of their Deezer Sessions at which fans see their favourite artists in a small and exclusive setting.

He performed current single ‘Something’s Got To Give’, a cover of Billie Eilish’s ‘bad guy’ and acoustic piano performances of ‘Jealous’ and ‘Beneath Your Beautiful’ at the Deezer Session.

Labrinth’s new album Imagination & the Misfit Kid will be released on 22 November on Deezer and other streaming services.
