Labour reveals fresh plot to force snap General Election sending Brits to the polls in six weeks

LABOUR could push Theresa May into a snap election if the PM refuses to go to the polls herself, it emerged today.

Jeremy Corbyn is considering another no-confidence vote which could topple Mrs May and trigger a fresh General Election.

Jeremy Corbyn could try and force a snap General Election

The gambit comes as Tory MPs urge the PM against calling an election to break the Brexit deadlock.

Labour have taken a five-point lead in the latest opinion poll – putting Mr Corbyn on course for Downing Street.

Today his close ally Emily Thornberry told Sky News: “It does look like the time will come when we need to call another confidence motion.”

Labour’s deputy leader Tom Watson added: “I’ve spoken to Jeremy last night, he’s preparing for a General Election.”

During the last Commons confidence vote in December, Mrs May scraped through as all Tory MPs and the DUP backed her.

But if the vote were rerun, furious Brexiteers could refuse to lend her support – risking the collapse of the Government.

That would see Britain return to the polls as soon as May.

POLL VAULT

After her deal was defeated for a third time on Friday, the PM hinted she may call an election as the only way to end Brexit chaos.

But top Tories have warned her against the gambit – today the party’s deputy chairman James Cleverly said: “We need to focus on delivering Brexit.

“An election would only delay that, the outcome would be uncertain.”

Backbenchers from across the Brexit divide said they would consider blocking an election if Mrs May went for it.

Ms Thornberry and Mr Watson both suggested Labour would promise a second referendum on Brexit in any election campaign.

The Shadow Foreign Secretary said: “I think we’re likely to leave the EU, but I think it’s something we need to agree ourselves and I think there’s a strong argument for asking the people to have the final say on this.”

The deputy leader added: “I think that’s the only way we can bring the country back together. A people’s vote is the solution.”
