Labour Party leadership candidates: The seven candidates as election nears

Emily Thornberry

Emily Thornberry is one of two confirmed candidates for the leadership role this year and was first to announce her intentions late last year.

The Shadow Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs came out punching after the announcement and released her foreign policy objectives via Facebook on New Year’s Day.

She claims to have “pummelled” Boris Johnson in Parliament and could sweep some of the moderate vote from Keir Starmer.

Clive Lewis

Clive Lewis is the second official contender for the leadership role, having announced his candidacy in December.

The MP for Norwich South said he hopes to “unleash” the party and blamed “indecisiveness” and “disconnected policies” for Labour’s loss.

He is less well-known than some other candidates and may find difficulty gaining traction if fellow left-wing candidate Rebecca Long-Bailey announced her intention to run.
