Labour leadership polls tracker: Who will win bid to replace Jeremy Corbyn? Latest odds

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn will soon step down following his party’s most disastrous election results in nearly a century. Mr Corbyn announced his intention to quit shortly after the election results were declared in December.

Since his announcement, candidates from across the Labour Party have put themselves forward to replace Mr Corbyn.

There are six declared candidates, and to stand each must achieve the threshold support of 10 percent of the combined membership of the Parliamentary Labour Party (PLP) and European Parliamentary Labour Party.

They also require nominations by at least five percent of Constituency Labour Parties (CLPs).

This means candidates need the support of 22 MPs and MEPs, and 33 CLPs.

The declared candidates are:

Clive Lewis, Shadow Treasury Minister and MP for Norwich South

Rebecca Long-Bailey, Shadow Business Secretary and MP for Salford and Eccles

Lisa Nandy, former Shadow Energy Secretary 2015 to 2016 and current MP for Wigan

Jess Phillips, MP for Birmingham Yardley

Keir Starmer, Shadow Brexit Secretary and MP for Holborn and St Pancras

Emily Thornberry, Shadow First Secretary of State, Shadow Foreign Secretary and MP for Islington South and Finsbury

“I wouldn’t say it’s for somebody else. I want the files, I want to know the numbers on my desk so that I can monitor this.

“Only when people who have left our party because of anti-Semitism feel that they can return will I be truly satisfied that we have dealt with the problem.”

Sir Keir has emerged as the clear favourite among Labour MPs and was the first of the six contenders to secure the 22 nominations required to progress to the next stage of the contest.

Ms Long-Bailey, the favourite of the left, and the backbenchers Ms Nandy and Ms Phillips have also passed the threshold.

However shadow foreign secretary Ms Thornberry, with 10 nominations, and Mr Lewis, with just four, appear to be struggling.

They have until 2.30pm on Monday to get the necessary support or be forced to drop out.

What do the latest polls and odds say on the Labour leadership election?

In a recent YouGov poll, 1,059 Labour members were asked to rank the six candidates – plus Yvette Cooper, Chair of the Home Affairs Select Committee, who has since chosen not to stand – in order of preference.

YouGov used the polling data to work through the various rounds of voting by removing the bottom candidate one at a time, and then moving their votes over to other candidates depending on their preference, as will be done in the real vote.

This was to reflect the Labour Party’s preferential voting system.

After five rounds, it was between Sir Keir and Ms Long-Bailey, and it was the Shadow Brexit Secretary who emerged victorious.

According to the YouGov poll, Sir Keir was the favourite with 61 percent of the vote to Ms Long-Bailey’s 39 percent.

However YouGov said of the results: “At this stage in the contest it is important to caveat these results.

“Firstly, we don’t know what the final list of candidates will look like, as they each have to qualify by gaining the support of trade unions and MPs.

“We also don’t know what the final rules of the contest will be. Affiliated members (e.g. members of trade unions) and registered supporters (who can pay a small fee to get a vote in the contest) will also make up a portion of the electorate, and we don’t currently know how their votes will break.

“Finally, we don’t know what impact the campaign might have. For example, the left-wing membership may be won over by a candidate running on a more radical platform, particularly if they are endorsed by Jeremy Corbyn, a leader they overwhelmingly voted for just four years ago.

“But as things currently stand, Keir Starmer is the man to beat.”

Odds wise, bookmakers Ladbrokes make Sir Keir the clear 1/2 favourite in the betting ahead of Ms Long-Bailey (4/1) and Ms Nandy, whose odds have drifted to 5/1.

This leaves three rank outsiders in Jess Phillips (20/1), Clive Lewis (100/1) and Emily Thornberry (100/1).

Ladbrokes spokesman Alex Apati said: “It looks like it’s now a three-horse race to replace Corbyn, with Starmer, Long-Bailey and Nandy pulling away from the chasing pack.”

Next Labour Leader according to Ladbrokes latest betting

  • Keir Starmer – 1/2
  • Rebecca Long-Bailey – 4/1
  • Lisa Nandy – 5/1
  • Jess Phillips – 20/1
  • Clive Lewis – 100/1
  • Emily Thornberry – 100/1
