Labour apologise after frontbencher Kate Green said Covid-19 pandemic was a ‘good crisis’ to exploit

LABOUR issued a grovelling apology after a frontbencher described the coronavirus pandemic as a “good crisis” to exploit.

The party’s education boss Kate Green told activists Labour should “not let a good crisis go to waste”.

The explosive remarks sparked a furious backlash from appalled politicians who said it dismissed the suffering of 40,000 Brits killed by Covid.

Hammered about the remarks on Good Morning Britain, shadow foreign secretary Lisa Nandy said the party was sorry.

She told the ITV show: “It was absolutely the wrong way to express that and Kate knows that. She feels very passionately about this.

“I’m sure she will apologise if she hasn’t already.

“Let me apologise for the way that that’s come across as well. Nobody thinks there’s anything good about this crisis.”

She said Labour is “genuinely, very sorry for the way they’ve come across.

“That was not what was intended at all.”

She said Ms Green was pushing for the crisis to be a wakeup call for the government to put more cash into schools.

Ms Nandy added: “I know that Kate is really upset about the way that that came across.

“It was not the right way to express it at all.

“She was making the point that we’ve got to now make sure this Covid crisis doesn’t worsen that divide and doesn’t write some children off.”
